Magnesium for anxiety

How effective has this proven to be if any? Just wondering if it's worth investing in supplements.

thanks

Be careful on the dosing as magnesium and calcium have a big effect on the heart and conduction. Magnesium in low doses I used to think relaxed me a bit but don't now but it will give you diarrhea. Love Phillipa

thanks! (nm)

Magnesium made me more depressed.

I think fish oil/fatty fish is the best supplement for anxiety and depression. Full effect takes 10 weeks.

I actually take extra magnesium with my daily vitamins to combat constipation from my ADs. I don't think it's ever done much for my anxiety though, nor do I think it's ever had any affect on my depression. But if you're constipated, it will definiely help :) I supplement with magnesium only, NOT the magnesium/calcium combo you'll often see.

Nothing has worked as well for depression for me as magnesium.

If magnesium produces diarrhea at low doses, say 100 to 400 mg/day, I would say that's possible evidence for leaky gut syndrome.

For a very complete discussion of stress, magnesium, and depression see George Eby's site: "Rapid Recovery From Depression Using Magnesium Treatment" http://www.coldcure.com/html/dep.html

I've actually been taking between 750-1000mg per day for qiuite some time. No diarrrhea but I'm not constipated either

it never even occured to me that it might be helping my depression. I'll definitely be looking into those sites you recommended. I took the test and scored about a 46 - but it says to subtract 15 if you're taking at least 600mg so that brought it down to approx 31

thanks again for the info

VERY interesting!!!

In my personal experience magnesium is the only non-rx treatment I've found useful for anxiety (and ADHD also incidentally). Of course it's nothing like a benzo and I doubt it could tackle significant anxiety by itself.

The main problem I have with it is that it actually seems to poop-out a bit like a prescription.

There's lots of debates about the different forms and calcium/magnesium ratios that I honestly couldn't tell you about.

I take Slow-Mag (hospitals sometimes use this for people with mild magnesium deficiencies) which is Magnesium Oxide, or sometimes just good old rolaids which is magnesium carbonate.

I sometimes get heart palpitations and it definitely helps with that. I don't think you'd have to spend terribly much to give it a try. They always say however to make sure you don't have kidney problems as magnesium is eliminated by the kidneys. Hope this helped.
