In a few weeks I'll be taking an MAOI. I'm a bit confused about the diet; particularly soy. I am vegetarian and eat tofu a few times a week and soy protein at least once a day as it's my main source of protein. Obviously my mental health is far more important than my love for veggie burgers and the like, but I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty bummed. I've read contradicting info about tofu and can't find much info about soy protein. Has anyone here been able to eat tofu without issues? I'm referring to the packaged tofu and tofu in dishes at restaurants. Also, has anyone eaten soy protein, Morningstar Farms, Boca, Amy's frozen products and Tofurkey deli slices, without any issues? If it says "contains soy" on the package, am I just not allowed to eat it?
I'd really appreciate any info - I'm feeling pretty discouraged.
Thanks!

I've eaten regular tofu without any reaction. It was on my list of allowed foods (specifically it says "unfermented tofu"). It does say I can't have fermented tofu (tempeh).
I'm not sure about things like tofurkey because I'm not a vegetarian.
There is definitely a lot of conflicting information about what you can and can't have.

I do not eat tofu, although I'm not clear if it is OK or not. Some kinds might be, others might not be. I haven't wanted to test it just yet. I do eat a lot of seitan, which is primarily a wheat product.
The most reasonable and "accurate" MAOi Diet List comes from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

I speak only for myself, but after 10 months on an MAOI (60mg of Parnate). I haven't really had to restrict my diet at all. At first I avoided everything that was indicated on the diet restriction list. With my Pdoc's permission, I decided to try a small amount of cheese, just one thin slice, to see if there was a reaction and found there wasn't one. I gradually tried more in small incremental doses and eventually found that I could eat pizza and handle soy sauce just fine.
A real word of caution though, some people do indeed have severe reactions to these foods and it can be Extremely dangerous, but some people have no negative effect. Everybody's body processes medications and foods differently so there's no way to know how you'll react for certain. I would suggest talking to your doctor about it and remember to NEVER do anything if you haven't consulted them first.

I'm a vegan and I've been taking Parnate for awhile now. Be careful with things like soy protein powder and energy bars. I didn't need nifedipine and it wasn't a crisis situation, but I had a definite spike in blood pressure from those. I miss miso soup and sauerkraut. I eat small amounts of tofu at home and don't make enough for leftovers, but I'm wary of its freshness in restaurants. I also eat soy yogurt even though it's full of sugar (I figure it's not like I'm eating barrels of it). I can't give any feedback on mock deli slices, but I've been fine with seitan here and there and it's easy to make at home.
What do I do for protein? I guess everybody asks this of vegans/vegetarians, but I honestly don't do anything special. I'm not much of a mock meats person to begin with, though. Almonds, garbanzo beans, Sunshine Burgers (soy-free and way more awesome than Amy's), Grape Nuts?

Thanks so much of for the info and food lists. I started Parnate today and am a little nervous about forgetting to follow the diet. I'm sure I'll get used to it over time.
My pdoc told me I'd most likely lose weight, which is welcomed since I gained 50lbs on the previous meds. For those of you on Parnate - did you lose weight? Do you think it's due to the diet restrictions and/or the loss of appetite?
