Soy products OK with Nardil?

Posted by proudfoot on August 27, 2010, at 20:41:36

OK, so I'm liking my new Nardil Rx. But still getting used to the food issues.

Thought my other half was trying to kill me two days ago when he served me a soy-based veggie burger. I was two bites into it before I freaked. Since then, from the reading I've been doing, I think that was much ado about nothing.

Am I understanding correctly that soy products are OK so long as they're not fermented (e.g. soy sauce, miso, etc.)? Veggie burgers are frozen, so if cooked and eaten immediately, there's very little chance any bioactive amines (BA) could have accumulated, which is what causes the problem, right? What about tofu that's eaten while fresh? And fresh/frozen soybeans eaten as a cooked vegetable - is that considered OK?

I'm led to believe that things cooked in or containing soybean oil are OK - is that true? I can live without soy sauce, but eliminating all things soy from the diet is very hard to do...

Thanks for your valuable feedback!

Doug

Proudfoot,

Here is a resource that I like:

http://www.upmc.com/HealthAtoZ/patienteducation/Documents/MaoiDiet.pdf

It is by no means perfect, but it is one of the better lists out there. For example, I definitely eat mass quantities of fresh mozzarella cheese with no problems at all and I have a tap beer every now and again (nothing exotic, though). Monterey Jack cheeses raise my BP no matter what, so I stay away. I eat feta cheese, no problem.

I do stay away from provolone and romano, but pizza usually has a mix of these and I have had no problems so far. So far being the operative words. I do eat seitan, but avoid tofu.

Good luck with your Nardil.

I like that list as well - agreed that it's one of the better ones out there.

Getting together with friends for pizza tonight - supposedly mozzarella only. Fingers crososed... ;-)

Here is a site that I use. It indicates the number of mg of Tyramine in many food. I hope you will find it useful!

Hi Maxie,

Will be thinking of you over the next few days as you move on in your journey. Life sucks sometimes, but it's one day at a time, right?

In any case, what is the address for that site with the mg of tyramine in foods? That sounds very helpful. It was REALLY hard to not eat some hummus tonight from this nearby middle eastern restaurant...

Sending positive thoughts your way.

Doug

Atypical,
You still have to be careful with tap beer. It is not the beer but the unclean taps that can cause a problem. You might get lucky 10 times and on the 11th have a problem. I've never had a problem with any alcohol on Nardil.
Good Luck,
Jedi
PS There are some soy products that are very high in tyramine.

Hi Jedi,

Which soy products are you referring to? That's exactly what I'm trying to discern so I don't accidentally end up in the ER. I know about soy sauces, most tofu, and miso, but are there other specific soy products that you know of that pose a problem? Thanks!

Doug

Hi Doug, I tend to avoid most all soy products mostly on hearsay, These are the restrictions I follow written by Elizabeth, who was a long term poster to Babble back in the old days. Read some of her stuff, the lady was a guru. I've been on Nardil for over a decade. I have not done specific research on soy, just because it is something I can do without. I have used protein powders in the past with no trouble, I think they contained soy.
Be Well,
Jedi

There's nothing wrong with hummus. It contains no soy, no cheese. It's fine with Nardil. There's no need to be freaked about the diet restrictions. They're pretty straitfoward. Go to wikipedia, search on MAOIs and at the bottom of the page there are two links that comprehensively lay out the dietary restrictions. (Even soy sauce is ok, it turns out, if you keep it to a couple of tablespoons. Last night I had sushi with just a tablespoon of soy sauce.)
