i'm prego and off all meds, but been having mood shifts lately (not typical preg moody's either)
bouts of depression, bouts of anger and bouts of insomnia.
i just recently got a bad cold and started taking some cough medicine with codine. and i almost immediately noticed a difference.
#1 i got really decent sleep,
feel better mood, not every little thing bringing me down. more resistance to negative in my life.
more positive outlook. no anger outbursts, take things in stride.
is it just due to better sleep or could the codine be effecting my mood for the better?also, since it's safe in pregnancy could i get a rx for some type of codeine?

> is it just due to better sleep or could the codine be effecting my mood for the better? It's due to the effects that any opiate causes elation -- yes, in the short run opiates can make one feel good -- I loved percocet after wisdom tooth extraction.
> also, since it's safe in pregnancy could i get a rx for some type of codeine?
>Tylenol-Codeine is in pregnancy category C, which means a definite risk in pregnancy and not enough studies.
That being said if in extreme pain from something like strep, prescribed it at least in early pregnancy with caution, for a short period of time would probably not cause a great risk.
But long term use of it, just like the risky trials of bupenorphine, can cause the fetus and especially in late pregnancy to become opiate addicted and may have to be brought out of that state.
So I would say, no. NSAIDs are recommended instead for pain only in pregnancy.
Long term use of codeine, which a small amount will eventually convert to morphine, can cause addiction for both the mother and the child, and theoretically a miscarriage as well.
I would highly suggest consulting your gynecologist as well as your psychiatrist as I don't think this is a safe road to go down.

I was on an opiate for my depression - yes FOR my depression back in 2005. My psych doc put me on hydrocodone 5mg x 4 times a day in addition to my depression meds. Helped me out for years. Against my objections my new psych doc recently took me off of it because he was scared about his malpractice insurance.
I NEVER grew tolerant of it and NEVER abused it. I think opioids should be further studied in depression.

This topic always good for a heated argument on this board. They don't study opioids and most doctors don't write scripts because of drug hysteria - in short. Never mind that many "addicts" are self-medicating to relieve the psychic pain.
That said, the few studies that have been done, although few and underfunded, have found that about 20% to 30% of depressed patients have been helped. So not all psychiatric patients will automatically benefit, but some will.
I would advise that even after you have your baby, not to try that route if you live in the US. Even if you were to find someone to prescribe on a regular basis, highly unlikely in this climate, could you guarantee that the dr wouldn't get cold feet later?
