Can Prozac work again after poop out?

Posted by Epiphanie on November 14, 2007, at 17:30:13

Hi everyone,

I had 8 years of success on Prozac before it pooped out.

I have been off Prozac now for 11 months (taking Lexapro instead).

Does anyone know if it would be worth while to give Prozac another try?

Could it work for me a second time?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I guess lexapro didn't work well? How does lexapro feel?

As for prozac, I dunno, I have heard stories where people returned to it and it worked great as ever, and I've heard stories where it didn't. One thing likely though is that if you do try it again and it works it might poop out again. Might need to keep some other ideas on the back burner like adding modafinil to it, or adding zyprexa to it, something along those lines that.

I do recall a lady who felt great on 10mg, pooped out, great again on 20mg, pooped out, up to 40mg, great, pooped out, up to 60mg, great, pooped out...well, she ended up after this long battle finding that a mere 5mg along with 25mg 5htp worked better than anything and never pooped out.

I wish there was some way to predict. Prozac was the best for me, pooped out after 8 years, and I've been off it for a year now. I am tempted sometimes to try a little bit and see what happens, but then the thought of that month long cleaning out if it doesn't work bothers me.

I wish I could have found one when trying them all that worked for me and gave me relief for a while at least. Phillipa

Hey!!!!! I just read your other post about having the same problems with Lexapro as I am. The constant laziness, wanting to stay in bed all day, weight gain, blah. . . . Although it has helped my anxiety attacks, I have no desire to do anything AT ALL anymore but lay on my behind all day. I took prozac when I was a teenager. Don't remember why I got off of it. I don't remember it at all, are the side effects horrible like Paxil, and other SSRI's? The only reason I was prescribed Lexapro is because of the low side effect profile, because I wanted to jump overboard on Paxil. I think I tried Zoloft too and it put me in pure panic mode. I start a new job in January which gives me enough time to get used to side effects. I am thinking of trying Prozac =)

Lexapro was the closest thing to Prozac that I have tried. The depression is better, but not as good as Prozac. I did not get my energy back either like I did on Prozac.

What do you mean by the month long cleaning out of Prozac? What happened/symptoms did you experience?

I went off Prozac cold turkey November of last year because I listened to everyone telling me I didn't need an AD. As a result I fell into that suicidal depression in December. I tried to take the Prozac again during December after realizing my mistake but I became extremely nauseated. Prozac had never made me nauseas before, I couldn't understand why. By January I had to come clean and admit what I did to my PSY GUY and he put me on Lexapro.

Prozac was great. I was in the deepest of the dark places when I was first prescribed it. It took a month to work, but let me tell you, when it kicked in, it was like a miracle. It felt like the Dark clouds parted and the sun came streaming in. The only bothersome side effect I had from it was night sweats, but I figured out that if I didn't eat past 5 PM I would not get the night sweats. Wierd.

I absolutely loved it when it worked.

By the way, I laughed so hard when I read your description of the "Lexapro Laziness" because you described it so accurately!

Good Luck!

What I meant by the month long cleaning out is that it takes that long for prozac to be mostly gone from you system. It has a half life of about 7 days, which means half of your last dose is still there 7 days later. Half of that is still there after 14 days. It takes a long time for it to be completely gone. Unlike other SSRIs which are pretty much gone in 4 to 5 days. During the 3 month period after stopping prozac I had numerous neuromuscular things like twitching fingers and eyelids. I think the first half of the time it was from withdrawals, and the second half of the time, after prozac was completely washed out, it was from my nervous system readjusting to its new environment.

Hi Bleauberry,

You said that coming off the Prozac was awful for about a month, did you take anythig to help during that month and how did you feel after the month was up?

I tried coming off Seroxat, went through all the awful withdrawal affects and then when they finally passed I felt worst.

I would try doing it again and I can take the side affects to some extent but I can't take the depression afterwards.

Kind Regards.....Denise
