Klonopin worked well for me, but it was an illusion. I was really just saying the first thing that came into my head because I felt so confident, but now I look back and cringe...........

I think Nardil is supposed to be good for this and I'm interested in trying it myself, but I worry that it may have the same effect as Klonopin.

Opiates, particularly tramadol, was good too.

If you have the time and money CBT is great.

Klonopin is effective - you'll see immediate effects. But I see it more as a second line or something taken on a as-needed basis (though I've taken it for years).

Effexor (150-225 MG) and Paxil (40 MG) usually do the trick but they take time to kick in. Those are the ones most widely given by psychopharmacologists for social phobia. Both have worked for me.

Nardil has been reported to work in research but never worked for me.

But again - give CBT a try.

Hey

I understand completely what your mean about having nothing to say!

The other posters have obviesly been luckier than me in their response to meds

Nardil doesn't help this, same with Effexor

Benzo's kill the anxiety but make me dozy & sleepy, & not much fun to be with!

I have to say GHB works absolutely great for this, makes you not only a good talker but a good listener.
However be very careful with it!

Opiates are somewhat helpful for me, then again be careful.

CBT is good to try, at least it can't hurt.

I'm not having much luck with it at the moment, but then I guess I'm very treatment resistant

In what way do you find GHB superior to benzos and alcohol? I found it impaired my responses much more than either of them - felt a bit like a barbiturate except I often had headaches and muscle spasms on high doses. Low doses didn't seem to have much effect. How much were you taking?

If you are at an event with drinks, a drink or two helps a lot! Why do you suppose they have them at so many social gatherings? As long as you can honestly drink responsably, that may be an effective option, safer than any gbh. And you know, if you listen attentively, it hardly matters if you say a thing, people will repond. Attentive listeners are very popular and in short supply. Good luck!

I thought I'd add, the most entertaining guy I know is ultimately not so satisfying to spend time with. He's quite attractive, very smart, talented, peppy, and positive-the life of a party often- but somehow it's hard to get a word in, and if one does get a word in- it just reminds him of yet another wacky, highly entertaining story...about himself. The "aftertaste" of this ins't so great- makes everyone else feel dull. I don't think he's close to anyone.

The best a/d's I've had for this problem are Lexapro and Effexor, both at LOW doses. When I went up to 20 mg Lex or 100 Effex, I'd get nervous as a cat.
I have a family history of Social Anxiety and 2 of them are on Effexor.
I'm on Emsam, Lamictal, Ativan, Ambien, Topamax, Synthroid and Cytomel.
