Hi Carol welcome to psychobabble. It's a wonderful place where we all help each other. To answer your question about something to calm you down. Ativan is a good choice, so is klonopin, also valium, xanax are also good. Sounds like you need something longacting as your stress is ongoing. So klonopin or valium last longer. Have you seen a psychiatrist? I feel that benzos are a good choice. They will alleviate anxiety and calm you down very quickly. If a doctor suggests an antidepressant it will take a few weeks. In my opinion only a benzo is much better. And they don't have all those nasty side effects. You can Babblemail me anytime. Fondly, Phillipa

>Welcome and know you are not alone. I used to get so worked up that I would explode my anger on anyone and it was like I felt my blood boiling. My psych. doctor finally put me on Klonopin which works w/ an anti depressant/anxiety med. also. Ativan is said to be really good for some people, it just depends on your body chemistry.. I would mention this to my doc. if what you're doing isn't helping. You could feel so much better and that's good for your overall health. I hope this helps somewhat.

Welcome, this is a good site to come to if you are having issues. About the medication, Ativan 1mg, or Xanax are fast acting antiaxiety medications. Klonopin is longer acting, and may fit your situation. Valium is long acting also. Xanax at a low dose .25mg or Ativan .5mg-1mg i suggest.
Xanax has some antidepressant properties, which may help. Antidepressants such as Prozac, Cymbalta, and Lexepro help level imbalances, it may help with this time. Your always welcome on here, where here to support.
Take Care

Welcome to Psycho-Babble!
I'm sorry you are going through so much stress right now. Have you seen a doctor yet? The natural hormones you are taking could be making things worse. Sometimes we think that because something is natural that it is good for us. I really think you should seek medical advice.
You can ask about medication to help you through those rough moments. But my guess is that if your doctor doesn't know about the natural stuff you are taking, he/she will want you off it first and see how you do.
Have you had your hormone levels tested? That is something else that needs to be done.
Hormones can do really weird things like bring on anxiety, rage, depression ... you name. I am sure you are going through your own personal hell right now.
If you do get prescribed something for the anxiety, it probably won't be Ativan. It will probably be Xanax or Klonopin.
I hope you find some relief soon and keep posting about how you are doing.
Also, I don't know where you live, but some places have community health support for people who are caregivers to ill family members. If you could tap into a resource like that it would relieve some of the stress.
Take care.

The benzodiazepines are excellent anti-anxiety agents. I take Xanax myself and it works very well. The one thing you should be aware of is that all benzodiazepines are addictive if you take them daily on a long-term basis (anything over 2 weeks). Withdrawal from them can be very rough if you decide to come off them.

ativan or most other benzos could be a good call. If you go short-acting, and you feel you should take it for a while (probably good idea for most people), I'd go for Ativan instead of xanax...fewer problems with anxiety inbetween doses and what not. If you'd prefer something longer-acting, Valium might be a good idea..librium and Klonopin are good, too. An antidepressant, possibly with some Buspar added (non-benzo anti-anxiety agent: OK for anxiety, but also helps reduce overall tension and can boost the effects of an antidepressant) might be good to take along with the benzo...something sedating, like remeron, might be good if you're also having trouble sleeping. I'd also recommend you try to get some counselling or talk-therapy or join a support group..dealing with your issues from a number of different angles will help you feel better, faster. Good luck!
