Tileptal Side-Effects: Excema and Dandruff

Posted by SLS on August 2, 2005, at 11:43:47

I have been taking Trileptal for about two months. I'm experiencing the appearance of excema on my hands and fingers along with some heavy-duty dandruff. My ears are also becoming dried out and scaley. I am currently taking 900mg.

I have no experience with Trileptal, but lots of experience with excema and seborrhea... In fact, they're one of my most common stress reactions.

For what it's worth, soaking in a bath with some baking soda helps excema -- I get that on my legs, so you might find some relief just in a bowl of water -- and either DHS Zinc shampoo or Nizoral have both been helpful for me with the seborrhea. I use the Nizoral on my face in the shower, let it soak for a while, then rinse and wash again with Basis. I also use it behind my ears, but it's not nearly as effective there. For my ears, only steroid cream has ever helped. It's horrible: it feels as if my ears are planning to detach from my head, and it hurts so much I can't hardly wear my specs. My ex would say it looked like my ears were coming off, too, so I imagine it must have been pretty unpleasant to look at, too.

I'm so sorry that you're having trouble, Scott. Is the Trileptal helping any? I know you said that the initial benefits had decreased: any sign they want to come back and stay a while?

Take good care of yourself, my friend. (And think of dropping a line, eh? Some of us miss you...)

you could...decrease dosgaes, stop one or both meds, supplement your diet with vitamins/minerals, or treat the skin conditions. Or do a combo. My advice would be to get an RX for some Elidel...that's what I use for eczema (I just have it naturally...its not drug-induced or anything). For facial areas, Cetaphil really makes the best cleanser...the creamy one is the best, although the liquid ones are good if your skin is a little more oily or acne-prone. The cetaphil moisturizer (the kind in the big fat tub) is really the best stuff EVER for dry, crazy skin...my doc recommended it, and it really is awesome. Its heavy and hardcore, so you can use a little on your face and apply liberally anywhere else its needed. When I get an eczema outbreak, I usually do this kind of routine: wash face (cetaphil) apply elidel apply moisturizer (cetaphil)...couple hours later; re-apply moisturizer....re-apply again a couple hours later....night time: wash face, elidel, moisturize again. Usually the Elidel clears stuff up quickly, so you only have to use it when your skin goes crazy again. Taking Benadryl, Vistaril, that kind of thing really helps with the itch and reduces the urge to scratch--non-drowsy antishistamines help, just not as much.

Hi Racer.
Hi Med_Empowered.

Thanks for all of your help.

I think I might try lowering the Lamictal first. I'm not sure how much it is contributing to the mild relief I am experiencing compared to Trileptal. Without Trileptal, I definitely need Lamictal, but perhaps I can simply swap them and hope that the side effects abate.

I'll look into your other suggestions.

>heavy-duty dandruff...

That reminds me. I love the smell of coal tar shampoo, especially Polytar. In fact, Polytar's a mixture of different tars: coal tar, pine tar and juniper tar.
