Does anybody have received a PET ? was this useful

Posted by Tepiaca on August 2, 2005, at 18:15:30

Hello
I remember the first time in my life that I went to a Pschiatry ( I was 16 ). The doctor told my parents that I needed to receive a PET to discover wheter I was depressed or I was suffering from a psychosis. At the end I did not received the PET because another doctor told us that it was useless to do this because it was obvious that I was suffering from a depression. During 4 years I tried all the ADs in the market and none of them worked on me. I finally started taking an AP ( Zyprexa ) that help me alot. Then I switch to Seroquel which was even better.

Question
If I had that PET in the beggining of my problem would I had avoid those 4 years taking ADs?

Is the PET a good weapon for the treatment of mental diseases?

I don't know why they have these fancy machines and then discourage their use. It has also been suggested to me to have a PET or a SPECT. I was told it was useless for definite diagnosis due to lack of trained technicians to interpret the data.
The Doc that says it was useless because depression was obvious is the first who should have a PET to examine his head! Makes me mad, these absolute statements.

I had an abnormal MRI, a lesion at a ventricle and five areas of signal intensity. I want to know what happened to me and I get treated like the Docs know. No, they don't know, they are guessing! They could find out specifics with the tool of technology but won't try. But to act like the guess work is the absolute is the ultimate insult.

I think my only chance to get a PET is as a research study object. Any other further imaging tools utilization I can only hope for post mortem. Yes, the tools are there, powerful and underutilized, it borders on negligence.

Hi,
i'm sorry that you aren't able to have tests that you think would be helpful in dx your problem. If you are concerned because of the abnormality that was already found you should see a dr that you can trust - get another opinion if possible.

About six months ago i had a PET scan of most of my body to rule out a plasmacytoma because i have cloned immuniogloblins in my blood and severe chronic pain. A contrast dye is injected and the body tissues are scanned as the dye goes through them and abnormalities are able (hopefully), to be seen. It's an expensive test and exposes you to radiation.

Take care, Bimini. i hope that you will be able to have all the helpful tests that you need to have the correct dx. i didn't get any answers from the test- still in pain and nothing showed up.

Hi bimini
I dont understand why there is a lack of trained technicians, A PET study is not as new as it seems. It has about 20 years since doctors start to using it.

How much cost a PET in the USA ???

Kerria,

Did the test rule out plasmacytoma? Does the cloned immunioglobulins mean that antibodies increased to fight an unknown enemy and it can't be found by PET?
I know how it feels to not get answers, in your case it is urgent to find one sooner rather than later. Pain is destructive on so many fronts, it joins an alliance with the enemy and creates more problems.

Take good care of yourself to ease pain. I'm living with pain for over two years. Pain medication is absolute useless or exacerbating. Found breathing techniques and relaxing visualization to be helpful. Certain movement of stretching and turning/rotating waist (tai-chi), spinal manipulation, abdominal muscle isolation and hot water massage helps.

I have given up fighting for answers for now and concentrate on improving coping skills. My case is complicated by politics of litigation and subrogation rights, a maddening game of lie and hide, twist and shout.

How much? A survey-based cost analysis of PET with FDG by estimating direct, indirect, and capital costs from eight PET centers:

Mean cost per scan attributable to the direct cost of scanner operation was $830 (range, $306–1742). The mean cost per manufactured dose of FDG synthesis was $528 (range, $150–922)whereas the mean cost per purchased dose of FDG was $616 (range, $425–1155)

Adjusted estimated PET costs ranged from $1000 to $5000. Physician and non-physician staff costs (44%) and the capital cost of the scanner (35%)
Reimbursements are calculated by square foot ratios of facility, staff and so forth.

Did that answer your question? LOL, it just answered mine. They can't afford the trained staff along with scans by reimbursement rate. It's business as usual.

Hi Bimini,

No, the PET scan didn't show any plasmacytomas or anything abnormal that could place any definative cause of the pain. It makes things terribly difficult for me because it's so severe and hard for the pain management dr and all the other drs i went to to believe me. The pain management dr won't prescribe pain medicines anymore, he said, which terrifies me because i can't live in the pain.
Tomorrow i'm having a nerve block done by him-- so nervous-- it feels that i have no other option.

Concentrating on coping skills will be the next thing- i'm trying to look into ways whenever i'm not so depressed about it. You're correct- pain takes a destructive toll on every part of our lives, making us act differently because we hurt so much. The immuniogloblins knocked out my thyroid also, so now i need synthyroid.

Bimini, i'm sorry that there's so many things that are complicating your healing now and hope that you will overcome all of them.

Peace,
kerria
