How much? A survey-based cost analysis of PET with FDG by estimating direct, indirect, and capital costs from eight PET centers:
Mean cost per scan attributable to the direct cost of scanner operation was $830 (range, $306–1742). The mean cost per manufactured dose of FDG synthesis was $528 (range, $150–922)whereas the mean cost per purchased dose of FDG was $616 (range, $425–1155)
Adjusted estimated PET costs ranged from $1000 to $5000. Physician and non-physician staff costs (44%) and the capital cost of the scanner (35%)
Reimbursements are calculated by square foot ratios of facility, staff and so forth.Did that answer your question? LOL, it just answered mine. They can't afford the trained staff along with scans by reimbursement rate. It's business as usual.
