Hello,
This is my first time posting on this board, or any board for that matter...so I hope I am doing this correctly.
I have been going to a large hospital system here in the Northeast for some time now for ocd. In the past couple of years I have tried most of the SSRI's. Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, Lexapro. Effexor was the most effective a couple of summers ago, but I thought I could still feel better if I tried something else.
Since that time, every SSRI I take causes so much irritation/anger that I can't stand to be on it.
The physicians mentioned taking Depakote which really has brought down the anger quite a bit. Now they think that I ought to give Wellbutrin a shot.
I will say that I believe there is certainly some depression mixed in with the ocd and that it fluctuates between anger and just felling poorly about everything (little hope of getting better).
Does anyone have any suggestions or similiar expereiences?
Thank you,
Michael

I took Wellbutrin for a while, and my experiences with it weren't great. It made me very anxious and irritable, as well as manic. I had to stop taking it, and switch to Zoloft. Everyone does react differently to Wellbutrin, so you may want to give it a try. It could work for you! It's worth a month's try....you never know. -L

Sure,You MUST try Anafranil at a dose of 150-300mg for at least 12 weeks -- this is the standard anti-OCD medication...it totally wipes it out in so many people.....also, try antipsychotics in low doses -- Zyprexa, Seroquel, Risperidone....please don't be scared of these meds, they really arent that harmful, esp if taken at low doses. Some people take them for years and years with no problems -- and these are the older antipsycotics which are supposed to be worse!
Try Anafaranil,
Anti-psychotic,
Nardil,
Luvox -- the best SSRI for OCD.Keep happy if possible!

i think out of all the SSRI's ---Luvox is the best for OCD. The others might also be indicated for OCD---but luvox and anafranil are the gold standard for this condition

The Antipsychotics u listed are the newer ones, the atypicals are not the older ones. I was on them for years and developed Tardive Dyskinesia. It does happen, and I know two other people that have developed tardive dyskinesia from atypicals aswell.
I was also on them mainly for OCD.
Im not saying no one should take them, but the risk is real and it can be bad. Permanent dystonia and tardive akathesia are also other problems that can occur. Ive had many problems with akathesia that also lasted for a long time even after stopping the AP's, i had to take benztropine for a while to help with this.
Take care

I got tardive dyskinesia from atypical antipsychotics. They say that the older antipsychotics do this more often though and the atypicals are "safer" but I personally know two people who have TD from atypicals and one of those people has a friend who developed permanent dystonia in her neck from respridal (she was also only on it for a breif amount of time).
Im not saying that these drugs shouldnt be used, but I think they shouldnt be as used as much as they are and doctors should atleast warn their patients about the risks. They can be life saving medications but they can also ruin lives. Just my opinion anyway.

I also have OCD that, unfortunately, did NOT respond to the SRIs so a couple years back my pdoc prescribed Anafranil. I only managed to get up to 125mg, which according to ace is just below the therapeutic dose range. I was taken off it during a stay at the hosital...their doctor felt that since I hadn't tried ALL of the SSRIs I ought to give the others a shot. Anafranil just had too many side-effects according to him. Since then I've tried the rest of the SRIs, and all of the atypical APs. None of the atypicals helped, with the exception of Zyprexa. The reason I stopped that was because of the side-effects. I had a lot of trouble thinking which is good in a way, I guess, because people with OCD tend to think too much. But I had trouble carrying conversations...I could never think of what I wanted to say. At least now I only have trouble figuring out how I want to word things. I'm starting Nardil. It's not supposed to be all that effective for OCD, but I have anxieties and depression to worry about and if it alleviates the other symptoms in theory my OCD should lessen.

I thought his show was very insightful, for those who don't know how debilitating OCD can be. I didn't learn anything I didn't already know, though...probably because I've had the damn thing for years.

Me too, with the counting and things. But when I took luvox I think it helped a lot with the OCD. Why won't they Rx it anymore? Fondly, Phillipa

Luvox is still prescribed, as far as I know...but if you're in the US you have to go with the generic version. I guess pdocs don't use it as much anymore because of the increasingly wide variety of antidepressants on the market. I personally didn't find it all that effective, but then again I only got up to 100mg twice a day.

What kind of side effects did you have w/ anafril?
One other thing, have you noticed that your problems with anger are proceeded by a depressed state....and it always seems like the ones that are closest to me take the brunt of all my anger.
Thanks,

I've been on so many it's hard to say which was best...probably Paxil. Even so, I was not able push myself to go for behavioral therapy. As for the side-effects I experienced taking Anafranil, DRY MOUTH. I can remember being in the hospital and having to use the water fountains excessively. The only other side-effect I can remember is vivid dreams.
I can completely relate to everything you said about your anger. Depakote has helped, but because it does nothing for my depression I'm still very irritable. I take a lot of it out on my mother, which I feel horrible about.
This is the end of the thread.
