Does anyone care to comment on whether they believe one is more sedating or less sedating than another? Is one more or less likely to cause fatigue and depression in your experience?
Please share.

> Please share.Ok, I have been given Ativan for situational anxiety. I have been prescribed Xanax and Valium. I think Xanax works the best for claming my nerves, but for sleep I would have to say Valium. I currently take Dexedrine and Lunesta and I would have to say Lunesta has a benzo effect. I take the Dex early in the morning, but I find that I do not wind down until early evening.
What's worked best for you?

For me personally I find valium to be the least sedating and Xanax to be the most sedating. Ive tried about 5 benzo's or so, most were not that sedating for me. But hey thats just me :)
Take care.

> Please share.I've been on nearly all of them and found chlordiazepoxide (Librium) to be the easiest to tolerate as far as sedative effects. I used to go back and forth between Librium and Valium several times, and overall preferred the Librium as the least depressogenic benzo. Valium used to clearly depress me, clonazepam also does that, but it suppresses panic anxiety better than any of the others... hmmm.. maybe going back to Librium as a means to get off clon would be a good strategy.. One other thought is clorazepate (Tranxene). Never was scripted that one, it has a long half-life and is lower potency compared to clon, i.e.

How long have you been at this combo? I guess...Early morning adderall 20mg and clonazepam has been the best but still sub par in terms of depression relief. Taking an additional 10mg of adderall at 5pm only caquses me to be a hyperfocused anxious nut job. I also drink way too much coffee for someone with anxiety.

So basically they are all fatiguing and depressogenic to some extent?

I wouldn't want to say that, because if you are suffering panic (i.e.) or extreme GAD and agitation, they can be lifesavers and halt a nasty destructive cortisol cascade and allow you to get sleep and your mind to rest. The trouble comes (IMO), when you experience aggravated depression due to chronic use when they may not be needed as much, and it might be best to be at a lower dosage or on a different (less depressogenic) benzo, or off of them altogether, and/or on an alternative....

This is MY experience :
If you exclude the so- called "hypnotic" benzos, and talk about the so-called "anxiyolitic", then this is what I've found from personal experience:
From least sedating to the more...:
Tofisopam
Clobazam
Bentazepam
Bromazepam
Tetrazepam
Chlordiazepoxide*
Prazepam*
Oxazepam
Lorazepam
Delorazepam
Cloxazolam
Diazepam*
Alprazolam
Clorazepate*
Clonazepam
Ketazolam** Please note that those have very long half- life, and if taken in a relative high dose in the begining and continued at a that dose, can become highly sedating as they build up in the body, unlike the others.
Notes :
- Clonazepam bring an immediate depressed/apathetic/withdrawn/ blue feeling, no matter the dose is.
- Clorasepate also gave me a blue/depressed feeling.
- Clobazam was irritating and not good for me at all.
- Diazepam if taken as a single dose, after few hours it brings a depressed unpleasant feeling for a few hours, but if taken regularly, no problem.
- All benzos tend to give depressed feeling upon fast/abrupt discontinuation, alprazolam and lorazepam have this effect intensevely more than the others after few days- long term use,so easier to be substituted with potent long acting one (Bromazepam-Clona-Diazepam-Chlordiaze-Prazepam).Just my own experience.
Regards,
DH

I haven't been home for two days so i haven't been on the Board. Xanax used to calm a panic attack, ativan at one time just relaxed me, klonopin depresses me-the only one that does, and valium works the best for me. I don't know i'm taking it and maybe my chemistry has changed, but I don't seem to be anxious anymore at least not that I'm aware of. Fondly, Phillipa

Out of the benzos I've tried:
Sedation:
Valium << Klonopin < Xanax < AtivanDepression:
Xanax < Ativan* < Klonopin < ValiumSexual issues:
Valium < Xanax = Ativan << Klonopin* I'm concerned that Ativan makes me a little irritable, though.

Funny how we are all different. Klonopin, hardly sedating at all and the withdrawal effects the worst. No sexual side effects. Was great for emergecnt panic. Dout it would do much now, use betas to slow my heart.
Xanax: Was sedating for about a year but quit being so. Stopped working for emergency panic. Definite bad sexual side effects.
Valium: Very sedating for about a month then poops out. Sexual side effects are postitive if anything. Holds down panic, at least a bad a attack, for now.
Generally I become tolerant easy to benzos and coming off is brutal, long term. So I take Valium to keep in check the really wild stuff. I refuse to take ADs as they do nothing for me.

I don't even know if I would need stimulants if I could get free of the damn benzos...
I pretty much think I'm prescription drug dependent and none of it does much except satiate and fuel the fires of a mild and prescribed addiction. I gave up the street drugs and booze... I think this is a left over sometimes...

I doubt it, the withdrawals and dependency on street drugs are a cakewalk compared to benzos. I have done both. But benzo users are usually either labeled crazy or loaded up with other drugs. But tolerance and protracted withdrawal sydromes from benzos are a very real phenomenon. Often it is not you but the drug.

I have found that Librium is the least sedating benzo.
