Saw Pdoc today and have been bumped up to 30 mg. since no benefit yet. Wondering if anyone has taken 30 mg.and if S/E are still tolerable? I see some Lex users here have stayed with the it even with no benefits before 8-9 weeks, wondering if your dosage was increased during that time or if you are still on your initial dosage? Also, was it the doc who suggested staying on Lex? My doc seems to think that if it were going to work, that it would have already and she agreed to trying 30 mg.(at my request) for only two more weeks even though she felt it wouldn't be useful.
If anyone here has experiences similiar to mine, I'd greatly appreciate your input.
Thanks. Bess

I started at 10 mg for two weeks, started getting anxiety/panic attacks. Upped it 20 mg for almost 3 weeks and started back on my zoloft. Didn't seem to work for me. In my opinion, they usually start working within a couple weeks. Now I have to start my zoloft all over. Anxiety/panic attacks are subsiding, but now the depression has kicked in so will have to wait for zoloft to start working again. Hope that helps. Good luck. I know it's tough.

I'm not sure if this will help either of you but....
I started @5mg Lex, went to 10mg at week 4, when I started to have anxiety attacks and increased depression. I felt so terrible I just wanted to throw in the towel.
My Dr and people on this board convinced me to give it more time and I'm glad I did because after 9 weeks I could tell Lex was working for me.
I read many posts where people were saying they felt better after a few weeks and I had to tell myself that their metabolism was probably different and I should at least go the 8 weeks.
For me anyway, things got worse before they finally got better. It may be possible that another week or 2 would give you a better indication of whether Lex will work.
BEST OF LUCK TO BOTH OF YOU!!!

Okpolosi,
Your posts are usually the ones that keep me going . . . I'm at week four. I had a few days during week two that I thought were encouraging, but I've seen a noticeable dip since then (and I don't mean the dip I see everyday when I look in the mirror).
Has your weight stayed the same? Meaning - no weight increase attributed to the Lexapro, right?
I'm taking 5 mg. per evening.
Thanks for continuing to post!

Thanks for sharing your experiences. The SE are basically tolerable (not exactly pleasant!) but not worth going through if I don't feel like there will be a good outcome. Like so many have said, if it weren't for the encouraging words on this board I would have given up on Lex much earlier. I'll stay with it for a couple more weeks. Seems my dosage is quite high compared to others. Is dosage based on size (height and weight?)

Since starting Lex I have lost a total of 10lbs., now that was over about a 6-8 week period, so I (and my DR) have not been overly concerned. I am now close to my ideal weight for my age and height, have almost always been overweight for my adult life (was athletic teen in good shape into early 20's).As for the "DIP", I also experienced this....I started @5mg, and at about 4th week I began to get anxiety attacks (which I have NEVER had before) and my depression increased as well (in part because I was SURE the Lex was not going to work and I was wasting my time). My DR told me to go to 10mg and give it more time, which I did. But I did not really start to feel "better" until 8th week, and I was sure Lex was working only after 9th week.
Now Lex is not a miracle cure by any means....for me it has brought back "sanity". Befor Lex I was having a terrible time w/unwarranted episodes of rage (example: I had a terrible screaming fight w/hubby over "Where is my hairbrush?") and I was getting customer complaints at work and being written up by the Boss. I thought I was going through the "change" (I'm 47) but my DR assured me that I was NOT, still too young, and put me on Lex.
Since starting Lex I have not had any more of these "episodes", no more stupid fights or complaints at work. I don't feel like my senses have been numbed or any of that, I just don't get mad at the drop of a hat anymore and I am more cheerful and even-tempered, though I still occassionally "feel down" it is not HORRIBLE and I don't feel like I need to crawl into a hole until it passes.
Sorry to ramble on so....but if my sharing helps even one person, it's the least I can do for this board that has helped me so much.
BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF YOU!!!

I think this is the second post of yours (the one you just wrote) that I have saved in the "Notes" section of Outlook for back-up/future reference.
I had doctors telling me for years that I was too young to be in peri-menopause. Two years ago, a new gynecologist finally tested my hormone levels and gave me the news that I was well into menopause (well, true "menopause" is after you've gone one year without menstruation, which I have yet to do - i.e. it's usually a three-month cycle which means I never know if I've hit the last one or not . . . once it was six months).
Oh yeah, I'm 44.
I can't believe the extreme exhaustion I feel this week (which would be the beginning part of week 5).
Okpolosi, did you write this post? I'm going to copy and paste it here. If so - this is the one other post I've copied and pasted (saved) regarding Lexapro.
You are a SAINT in my book. I'm so glad to hear that Lexapro has had such a positive impact on your life. I'm not looking for miracles per se, just some degree of normalcy that can help me feel more motivated/alive and able to keep a schedule (all this and I'm also on 40 mg. of Adderall!).
By the way, the "hairbrush rage" sounds very peri-menopausal to me. I think natural hormones (prescribed) have helped me with some of the irritiation issues - or maybe it's just a phase of this darned "change" I've already gone through . . . who knows. To be perfectly honest, I don't think I have the energy anymore to get to enraged about much of anything.
Weird thing is (don't know if this is from Lexapro, Adderall, Wellbutrin or what) - my blood pressure was 102/60 at the doctor's office the other day. It has never been that low. I was shocked, considering the Adderall. So, I'm wondering if Lexapro hasn't calmed me down a bit? Again - who knows.
Here's that post of yours (I think it was yours). If it was yours, I had to laugh when I re-read it and saw the reference to Chex mix. I used to be certifiably addicted to that stuff!
Headaches -
First 2 weeks really bad, then went away.
(I have had this)Diahrea - Bad at first, gone by week 4.
(I have had constipation AND diarrhea, the Metamucil in capsule form does seem to help with that strange, constant "bearing down" sensation which had to be attributed to the Lexapro)Nausea - 1 to 2 hours after taking, gone by week 3.
(I have not had this . . . crossing my fingers that I don't)Zombie - bad at first, feeling gradually lessened, gone by week 4.
(I had that feeling the first go-round - on 10 mg.)Bubblehead - prominent first 2 weeks, gone by week 3.
(That's a good description . . . I think I felt that, too)FLU-like symptoms - all during week 2, gone at end of week 2.
(I don't think I've had that - although today I feel "flu-ish" in the sense that I feel so exhausted).Sleepy all day - gone by week 6, also changed time of taking Lex from morning to afternoon around week 5.
(I had this the first time when I stayed on just one week. I've had it this time as well, but not every week. I wish I had kept track - smart idea to do so!)Lethargy - started around week 3, gone by week 6. This one is a little tricky, you think you feel lethargy but once you get up and move it evaporates.
(YES, so true!)Depression - REALLY BAD at week 4, just suffered through it with encouragement from people here.
(I guess that's what I'm feeling? Hopeless? Like this isn't working? Not as "good" as I did a few weeks ago and frustrated by that fact).Anxiety - had several attacks weeks 3,4.
(Yep)Rash - had an itchy rash all over my back - week 1 and 2.
(little blisters on my hand)Dizziness - 1 to 4 hours after taking, gone by week 3.
(I take mine at night so if I'm feeling this, I'm feeling it in la-la land, and I don't mean the area where I live).Appetite - very poor first few weeks. Lost 6 pounds which I have not gained back. I find I eat less now than I used to, and feel full.
(Same here, weigh less than I have in years - but I'm also on Adderall . . . but the Lexapro seems to have even dulled the appetite even more - GOOD THING!!!).Carb craving - Chex Mix - I WANT SOME NOW!!! also Cheerios and BREAD!!!
(Wouldn't eat Cheerios if paid, and burnt out on Chex mix, especially after - years ago - when my husband said I sounded like a cow grazing in the field when I ate the stuff - but BREAD - yes! TOAST! Sourdough toast . . . an entire loaf in a week).
Jaw clenching - Made my teeth hurt by week 2. Still have a little of this now, but seems to be getting less and less.
(My "clenching" was in the chest - and it was very nerve-wracking, thought I was having a heart attack).Blurred vision - noticed around week 2, improved gradually.
(This is quite interesting . . . I hadn't read your post for quite some time, but just this week, I can see the computer screen without glasses again!!! I was actually looking in to bi-focal contacts last week - and probably need them, but I do feel like I'm seeing much better now that you mention it - or mentioned it weeks ago when you posted this).OKPOLOSI, again . . . your posts have been another light at the end of the tunnel (as have so many others).
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!
p.s. I added my comments thinking that perhaps someone else would eventually be able to relate to all this when they "find" this site doing a search on Lexapro, as I did (and probably as so many others have done as well).

Leeran - I thought the "hairbrush" incident and many others of a similar and recent nature were part of my peri-menopausal problem, that's what initially prompted me to go to the DR. I have been on 10mg Lexapro for a bit over a month, after a week start up on 5mg. For the last 10 days I've had a weird side effect: a feeling of pressure in my ears (like I want to "pop" them) and some sounds seem like they come through a tunnel. It began with one or two instances of a minute or so per day at first, but has gradually gotten to be more pervasive but of less intensity. My pdoc hasn't heard of such a side effect, and wanted to attribute it to anxiety, but I don't have "ringing in my ears" or "lightheadedness." I am using Lorazepam "as needed" which is .25 or .5mg once or twice a day/evening at present. Has anyone experienced this kind of feeling with Lexapro or any other SSRI? Also, what's the general consensus on loss of libido and orgasm for middleaged women? So far, mine has gone and hasn't returned (my reason for giving up on celexa 2 years ago, and effexor most recently. In between, serzone let me keep my sex life but wasn't adequate to the depression. Thanks for any posts.

The worst was chest pain/pressure in the first two weeks. Now the main SE are slight dizziness and feeling sleepy (constant yawning). Also in the last week I've had new SE including jaw clenching and headaches (probably from the jaw clenching). Strangely enough, I find it encouraging that the SE have changed over these past six weeks. It makes me feel that changes are still occuring with use of the Lex and there is still a possibility that I will get some benefit when I get to week 8 or 9. Not exactly scientific thinking but whatever it takes to keep me going............the idea of having to start over with a new med, that may or may not work after months of use, is that much more depressing.

I had this the first day pretty bad. The Lexapro starter kit contains only 10mg tablets and that is what it said to start with but I felt very strange that first day and a few after. I've been taking a couple of weeks now and occassionaly find myself popping my ears but nothing like the first few days.

** This is great, Bess, hopefully you will not have a bad time w/SE.
The worst was chest pain/pressure in the first two weeks. Now the main SE are slight dizziness and feeling sleepy (constant yawning).
** Bess - when do you take it, morning or evening? I started w/mornings but had the sleepy, yawning and was FALLING ASLEEP at 7PM! Started taking at 2-3PM and don't have that any more.
Also in the last week I've had new SE including jaw clenching and headaches (probably from the jaw clenching). \
** Bess, the jaw clenching is the only SE I still notice, it's not nearly as bad as at first. I noticed foods w/a lot of sugar gave me headaches during my first 2 mos. Now no problems w/sugar.
Strangely enough, I find it encouraging that the SE have changed over these past six weeks. It makes me feel that changes are still occuring with use of the Lex and there is still a possibility that I will get some benefit when I get to week 8 or 9. Not exactly scientific thinking but whatever it takes to keep me going
******* Bess - THIS IS GREAT! CHANGE IS GOOD! And just the fact that you write this is a very GOOD sign. If your Lex experience is similar to mine you should be pleased!! IT'S WORKING!!!
............the idea of having to start over with a new med, that may or may not work after months of use, is that much more depressing.
** Bess - my feelings EXACTLY!!! I was thinking the same thing at about the same time as you are. There is HOPE, hang in there a little longer, your SE's should lessen even more, and hopefully you will emerge as another Lex "BUTTERFLY"!!

Hi Jane! I don't notice "floaters" any more or less with Lexapro, but I wondered when I first started on antidepressants over 2 years ago if the medication had something to do with an increase at that time. Now, looking back, I think it's just middle age . . . I'm nearsighted and I've also lost significantly in my closeup vision over the past 4 months, but the optomitrist says that I'm "textbook classic" and neither he nor my pdoc think that it's the medications. My understanding is that "floaters" are normal, unless you have a huge quantity, in which case you should have your eyes examined just to give yourself peace of mind.

I only recently started taking Lexapro, but I remeber noticing "floaters" when I was 8 or 9 years old. Have not had them get worse.....yet.

I started Effexor about 2 weeks ago and I almost immediately noticed an increase in floaters. In my case, it has to be the meds.

If I see floaters I know I am under hydrated.
I know many AD's dry out secretions (anti-colonergic) so there may be your cause.
I always assumed it was not that I had more
floaters but that I was dehydrated. Eyes are mostly water and covered by tears. 8-10 glasses
of water a day is just a guide, many need much more.

It makes me feel that changes are still occuring with use of the Lex and there is still a possibility that I will get some benefit when I get to week 8 or 9. Okpolosi is the name my husband gave the computer, it means "ugly" in Chickasaw. I just adopted it when I joined this board as it seemed appropriate at the time. But now that just doesn't "fit" and I feel so much more like flitting around from one beautiful flower to another.....> Congratulations on your new name!

And I will continue to try to inspire and encourage others to break free of their "chrysalis" of depression and anxiety and fly free like the "BUTTERFLY"!
Are you nauseous yet from my overflowing ebulience, because I CAN continue........no....you've suffered enough already.TAKE CARE lil' jimi!!!

> BessI wish for you all the good things that Lex has to offer, I am doing so much better day by day, and hopefully you will be experiencing it too. It kind of creeps up on you, I was wondering when I was going to feel better, kept waiting for something BIG to happen, and then one day I was actually LAUGHING about something on TV - really laughing like I hadn't in soooo long!!! I have energy and motivation and the will to get things done. My husband commented the other day that I was acting like I was on speed....I did the laundry, some yard work, helped build a fence, and was ready to do more!!!
I wish ALL THE BEST TO YOU AND KEEP US POSTED ON YOUR PROGRESS!!!!
This is the end of the thread.
