new drug GEPIRONE and depression

Posted by hok on November 7, 2002, at 13:27:24

Has anybody heard anything about this new research drug? A friend told me that they are currently conducting trials on it, but the drug company is taking longer than expected in getting the data to the FDA for approvability. Supposedly the researchers believe that Gepirone's effect are superior to that of the SSRI's! And it also causes a lot less side effects too. Sounds too good to be true.

has anybody participated in the trials or know anything about it? I want to be the next guinea pig!

I called Columbia a little while back and one of the people involved with a study there was very impressed with the response. They hadn't gotten the results back, but the people in the study got better and they felt very good about it. They said the drug should be out the first quarter of next year. The side-effects are definitely minimal (good news, no sexual side-effects), but I haven't heard anything about the effect being superior to the SSRIs. I believe the company that makes the drug is Organon so you might want to check out their website.

I just looked on Organon's website, and it looks like the release of gepirone has been pushed back to 2004.

Gepirone is an agonist at presynaptic serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and a partial agonist at postsynaptic 5-HT1A receptors. The efficacy of the drug is probably similar to currently available antidepressants. The appeal of gepirone lies primarily with a decreased risk of side effects compared to SSRI's. It's not going to be a miracle drug for people with severe depression, but it will probably be a good alternative to SSRI's nonetheless. Gepirone may also be useful for some types of anxiety.

Gepirone taken alone probably won't be an effective treatment for the majority of people with OCD. It will, however, be a useful augmentation to other types of treatment in some cases. No clinical trials have been conducted, so I'm basing my speculation on studies involving buspirone (a 5-HT1A partial agonist that also affects dopamine D2 receptors). I think that it will be interesting to see the clinical benefits that can be gained from mixing gepirone with other drugs selective for particular serotonin receptors.

Hi, new here. I tried to get into Columbia's study on Gepirone in the summer of '00 or '01 but because Zoloft makes me hypomanic I was ineligible for the study :-(. I have severe atypical depression and from what i've read Gepirone is unique in that its supposed to be specifically for atypical depression but not as overwhelming as an MAOI. I'm very disappointed it won't be out until 2004, I wonder if its possible to get it under a compassionate use basis? Anyone try?

Anyone know if Gepirone is being tested anywhere besides new york city? I called Organon, the drug company developing Gepirone, and no one could answer my questions about the research on it. I would love to know if there is a testing site somewhere in the Midwest.

Secondly, anybody know if Gepirone is available in Canada or Europe yet (or will be available some time before the 2004 US expected release date)?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

I know the NY Psych institute, next to Columbia hospital, is doing the testing in NYC. I found the name and email address of a contact there by doing a google search. I think the person's name is Vincent Agosti but that's just off the top of my head. You can try doing a search for his email and dropping him a line. He might know although SOMEONE at Organon should know.
I plan to call Organon tomorrow (if i remember, memory and motivation loss are big time bad for me) and see if there's some sort of program to let me use Gepirone while the study results are pending.
From what i've been reading (google search: Gepirone) its not being sold in Europe either.
Good luck.

good luck. I assume they can't release the drug to anyone until FDA approval though. If you get through to anyone can you ask if they have any test sites for Gepirone near Chicago?

Also, if you happen to reach a primary contact in charge of Gerpirone research can you post the name and contact # at Organon for us? Would love to hear of any progress you make. Thanks

I'm so pleased to see folks pursuing the availability of Gepirone. If anyone discovers a source of info re clinical trial sites, etc, please post for the rest of us.
