In reply to new drug GEPIRONE and depression, posted by hok on November 7, 2002, at 13:27:24
Gepirone is an agonist at presynaptic serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and a partial agonist at postsynaptic 5-HT1A receptors. The efficacy of the drug is probably similar to currently available antidepressants. The appeal of gepirone lies primarily with a decreased risk of side effects compared to SSRI's. It's not going to be a miracle drug for people with severe depression, but it will probably be a good alternative to SSRI's nonetheless. Gepirone may also be useful for some types of anxiety.
