Hello all and sundry Menopausers
(although I dont understand why it is called 'pause' cause it has STOPPED...) On my list of things to attack to help my mental health is a full night of restful sleep. Not waking up 5 to 10 times every night would, it seems to me, contribute greatly to this mental health goal.I have tried dietary, OTC, HRT, Estrogens and Progesterone combinations over the last three years or more. My last trial was a pure estrogen patch.
I am now to the bottom of the list, a small group of studies that have shown Effexor and Neurontin help eliminate them.
My GYN said she doesnt use those meds and to talk to the Pdoc, the Pdoc said, talk to the GYN...so, therefore: I am going to my GP.
I am collecting information.
Is there anyone here who has had results using one or the other of these medications to stop hotflashes?
Thanks,
aging mouse

FYI, I have been on Effexor XR (187.5mg/day) and Clonazepam (.75 mg/day) for ~2 yrs., and on Neurontin (900mg/day [after going off Topomax]) for ~6 mo., all for major depressive disorder (or possibly bipolar II - because of very few questionable mild hypomanic episodes). I had experienced hot flashes (not fun and I wouldn't describe them as "flushes") ~10 yrs. ago for ~3 yrs. during which time I was not on any medication (in my early 50's then). While taking these meds (as well as when taking Prozac before Effexor), I have felt warmer than previously during all seasons, but extremely warm/hot during warm/hot weather, frequently experiencing feelings similar to hot flashes. I've noticed that ea. of these meds has excessive sweating or a some such symptom listed as a side effect. I wonder what dosage is recommended to relieve hot flashes. It just doesn't make sense to me that these meds can treat hot flashes, but as this forum demonstrates, each person responds in her/his own way to medications. I try to stay away from hot climates and just deal w/ the sweat (which is all I did during menopause). Do you have references for the studies you mention? Hope you find relief, but time should eventually help ...

Hi, thank you for your feed back. I, too, observed this contradition between what was being reported and what was listed on side effect lists. I have found references to relief of hotflashes in the Mayo Clinic Newsletter I subscribe to and hunting through Google using effexor neurontin hot flashes. As I said, these studies are small and I only consider it because nothing else has worked. I know I am 'just getting old', and time should probably help, but at the same time, aaaawwwkkkkk, IT MIGHT NOT!! I have been having this interrupted sleep for going on three years and would like to get something to help. I have this desperate feeling that I will be like this forever. Some people DO, you know.... Sigh. I guess, I mostly would like closure. If this is something I will just have to deal with, then, hey, I have dealt with it for three years, yes? and I will come to terms with it. However, 10 times a night seems a little excessive, don't you thinK? Anyway, that is the plan at this point...

I had hot flashes for over 5 years. It drove me nuts [from age 49]. However, when I took Prozac, it seemed to reduce the hot flashes, though they were less than they had been anyway, I would have to say I had less hot flashes on Prozac. I am generally a cold person by nature [always cold when nobody else is]. A former boyfriend of mine on Effexor sweated all the time, day and night. He was always exhausted and sweating from the Effexor. I can't explain the lightening and lessening of hot flashes for the year I was on Prozac........
