In reply to Psych Meds relieving Hot Flashes?, posted by susan C on October 26, 2002, at 13:21:34
FYI, I have been on Effexor XR (187.5mg/day) and Clonazepam (.75 mg/day) for ~2 yrs., and on Neurontin (900mg/day [after going off Topomax]) for ~6 mo., all for major depressive disorder (or possibly bipolar II - because of very few questionable mild hypomanic episodes). I had experienced hot flashes (not fun and I wouldn't describe them as "flushes") ~10 yrs. ago for ~3 yrs. during which time I was not on any medication (in my early 50's then). While taking these meds (as well as when taking Prozac before Effexor), I have felt warmer than previously during all seasons, but extremely warm/hot during warm/hot weather, frequently experiencing feelings similar to hot flashes. I've noticed that ea. of these meds has excessive sweating or a some such symptom listed as a side effect. I wonder what dosage is recommended to relieve hot flashes. It just doesn't make sense to me that these meds can treat hot flashes, but as this forum demonstrates, each person responds in her/his own way to medications. I try to stay away from hot climates and just deal w/ the sweat (which is all I did during menopause). Do you have references for the studies you mention? Hope you find relief, but time should eventually help ...
