Hi All,
I want to try flaxseed oil for a while. I bought a bottle of the stuff and from what I have read on this board, and from reading the labels, I gather I should be shooting for about 1 tablespoon per day.
That's a lotta oil. Does anyone have any suggestions about ways to consume it (preferably in small amounts at a time)? I figured salad dressing was one option, though you lose some of it at the bottom of the salad bowl. I need some other ideas. What happens if you use it to cook or bake - does it change the fatty acid profiles?
I wanted to try the liquid because it was so much cheaper than the capsules and I'm already getting clobbered with my medicine co-pays.
Thanks,
Emme

Hi Emme,
I've been taking Ground Flax Seed Meal. It's just ground flax seeds, but I heard that eating the whole flax seeds isn't beneficial because whole seeds pass right through, unabsorbed. The flax seed meal is quite tasty, sort of nutty tasting. Sometimes I put it on salad, but usually I just add one or two tablespoons to juice or a yogurt shake. By the way, the ground seeds/meal are supposed to be a remedy for constipation, too. The brand I buy is Bob's Red Mill Ground Flax Seed Meal. I buy it at the health food store.

You can also buy whole flax seeds and grind them yourself in a nut grinder or coffee grinder, but I didn't want to be bothered with that.

I think it's very difficult to achieve the proper Omega 6/Omega 3 oil balance because of the preponderance of Omega 6 oils in our diets. Flaxseed oil is a great source of Omega 3. I also take fish oil (micronized) and DHA capsules to try to get the proper balance.

Thanks Bekka. That sounds like a good option. I'll go look for it.

Please tell me, what are you using the flaxseed oil for?

Thanks Richard. Okay, now I know I can't fry with it. I'm really hoping for more culinary suggestions from the board. How do you take yours besides salads? (Maybe I should increase my salad-making.) I really don't think there's any way I could swallow a spoonful of oil without gagging. So I was hoping to spread it out over a couple of snacks or meals in some fashion or other.
Thanks,

Hi. Well, the current working diagnosis is BPII. Help in mood control from omega 3 fatty acids would be nice, although I wasn't blown away by OmegaBrite and the stuff is just too expensive. But I have also noticed my hair seems drier on Lamictal and Neurontin. So I am hoping that the oil will counteract some of that.

Hi Emme,
Flaxseed oil is very tasty with a nutty flavor. I like it for breakfast dizzled on an toasted english muffin with cottage cheese. It's very satisfy and filling. And for a while gave me a nice feeling of "well being"At first I was a little nauseated by a whole tbs of oil at one time. But it quickly passed. And now I crave FSOil with meals (drizzled on the english muffin with cottage cheese or with fruit yogurt.) Otherwise I find myself extra hungry all day. I am not crazy about it as salad dressing. But just wipe the salad plate with bread if you want to soak up all the oil.
The ground flax seed is good too. You are supposed to put in in juice (i like it in plain yogurt), but I don't mind just eating it off the spoon. Crunchy and nutty, yum! But watch out, the ground flax is very laxative...more so than the oil for me.
Go to www.barleans.com Flaxseed oil with lignins and "Fortiflax" are the two I order. Excellent product. Must refrigerate. It's just part of my daily diet now...
Hope this helps.

Thanks Chloe,
I'll try that. Maybe I'll try using both the ground seeds and the oil. The oil I got also has evening primrose oil and I think it has borage oil.
