Remeron and Dysphoric Hypomania????

Posted by Geezer on February 26, 2002, at 15:56:21

Has anyone ever triggered Dysphoric Hypomania with Remeron?

I am Bipolar II

Current Meds:
1) Depakote ER 1000mg
2) Remeron 30mg
3) Ambien 10mg

After 4 days at Remeron 15mg. saw some improvement in depression. Pdoc increased Remeron to 30mg, on day 2 at 30mg anger hit. Seems like anything can be a trigger. Have had some scary times over the last 9 days at 30mg. I suppose the solution is a no-brainer, reduce the Remeron. Just took a little Klonopin to see if that settles things down. Had to fire the new pdoc today - she insists cognative therapy is the answer, good lord, I have a daughter older than she is.

Thanks

Geezer

as your doc upped your dosage, norephinephrine kicks in, at higher dosages, which may have sparked your aggression. At 15mg, remeron is a good sleeping pill. In comparison to ambien, ambien knocks you out quick, and you wake up without groggyness. Remeron will ease you asleep, and you will sleep longer and wake up more sedated.
tell your doc to keep the remeron at 30mg and augemnt it with 1mg of klonopin 2x a day. klonopin works well as a mood stabilizer, antianxiety agent.

Hi,

I am BPII and became VERY hostile while taking Remeron. I have speculated here before about what *mechanism* may have caused it (alpha-2 adrenoreceptor antagonism), but bottom-line I can't take the stuff. Even tiny doses. I think pdocs prescribe to bipolars a lot because it is so good for sleep. Remeron, Buspar, Effexor, and prednisone are the four meds (out of dozens) that I have tried that have made me the most angry and hostile (I nearly lost my job each time on all of those). If I increased the Remeron from 7.5 to 15.0 mg I got *sleep disturbances*.

Hi Geezer,

Gosh do I know what you mean about being aggressive. My Doc took me off Serzone and because I can't take MOST meds she asked if I had tried Remeron...long story short... I felt psycotic on the stuff and won't go into what I did while I was on it, just glad I didn't hurt anyone, even hearing the name "Remeron" runs cold chills down my back.

Geezer,

Remeron at the higher doses made me feel
agitated during the day (still helped me sleep).
I'm bpII. I took it as an adjunct to Lamictal
and Klonopin.

Can you remind us as to which ADs you have tried
since going on Depakote?

I found that Wellbutrin was a good AD for bipolar.
Calmed me down.

I couldnt imagine my life without remeron. There is nothing else in this world that will put me to sleep. I have gone 3 days without taking it... I dont want to get addicted to the stuff. I lay in bed and my heart races and I have heart palpitations... i take a tiny little piece if remeron... i basically lick a tiny piece of it and it puts me to sleep. i take maybe 1mg of remeron out of a 30mg pill. I suffer from Horrible anxiety due to a cocaine overdose 1 year ago.... and Remeron takes away all my anxiety. Id rather be tired than freaking stimulated. My mom has tons of Risperdal. Is that effective on panic disorder? I dont have insurance or a doctor so i have to medicate myself.

Geno, Mitch, Po_thang, John, & Panic Attack, thank you! You may not know how CORRECT you were in response to my question.

Just returned from pdoc appointment.
1) Mitch-your right-looks like alpha-2 adrenoreceptor antagonism is the culprit. Like you I got VERY hostile - pdoc confirms dysphoric hypomania. Told me to increase Dep. and go easy on Remeron.
2) John-I have taken several ADs including Wellbutrin (the rest were SSRIs). I think Wellbutrin is perhaps the overall best for many of us with Bipolar II for reasons you know. I never pushed Well to the limit and I had no mood stablizers in the mix at the time. I have only been stabilized 9 months - since then - Zoloft pushed to 200mg.

To date Ziprasidone triggered dysphoric hypomania when I was not stabilized and Remeron did the same when I was stabilized. Please remember I am a "brittle" Bipolar II due to thirty years of incorrect monotherapy with TCAs and a LOT of noncompliance. It is also difficult because "I don't trust anyone (pdocs)". Well I trust the one I saw today - knows his stuff. I hope each of you take a little pride in your contribution on this subject. I was in more than a little trouble when I posted this subject......you made THE difference.

Thank you

Geezer

Keep us posted about your situation-med changes, problems, OK? I find it important to share information about failures and successes with meds to others that have had similar responses and such.

good luck with new doctor,

Mitch

Hi Geezer,

I'm so glad you feel are getting some really good
quality information to push your treatment along the right
direction. I have found help on the internet to be so
invaluable. I went through crappy doctors. After I started to
research the matter myself and found some good advice from
experienced patients on how I ought to be treated it was easy
for me to evaluate whether or not my pdoc was good. Then I
could put more trust in his judgement (allthough I will always
remain skeptical and see the trends on pbabble etc).

Best regards, I feel you are on the road to recovery. I
see a bright future ahead.

Cheers,
John

Haven't officially been diagnosed with bipolar,(however Doc is tryting to r/o, family hx. of) but I definately experienced an anxious, dysphoric high after taking Remeron, 45mg during the 2nd and 3rd week of treatment. 4th week my Doc added Zoloft. still don't feel normal.
