Inexpensive psychiatrist

Posted by androog on November 13, 2001, at 21:59:39

Does anyone know of a psychiatrist in the Chicagoland area that works on a sliding scale or is otherwise inexpensive?

My current pdoc writes one month's prescription at a time so I have to go see him once a month. All he does is write me another prescription and then charges me $120 for the visit.

My wife and I are running a small business out of our home and we're barely making ends meet. Also, due to my pre-existing conditions, nobody will insure me, so all medical costs come out-of-pocket. My prescriptions alone cost over $300 per month, so it adds up quickly.

I live in Oak Park and would like to find someone in the west suburbs. I know beggars can't be choosers so the name of anyone in the area would be greatly appreciated.

I hope everyone gets as much out of this web site as I do.

Thanks,
Androog

Unfortunately psychiatry is rather expensive.
The discount psychiatrist are likely to be
new grads looking to build up a practice. You
may get some good recommendations with the
proper connections.

I grew up in the chicago area. Maybe I can dig
into this a little for you. I know some people
who specialize in social work so they may have
some ideas. What is your current diagnosis and
treatment plan, maybe pbabble experienced people
can help direct you in the mean while? Believe
me, a lot of people on this thread are as knowledgable
as 50% of psychiatrists and have actually taken
the meds. But this is not a replacement for a
thorough exam from a psychiatrist/pdoc, etc.

Hasn't your doc heard of the 15 minute med check..my doc charges 60.00 for that.
If you are stabilized, many docs will say to see them in a few months, etc.
All of my pdoc's have worked with me when I have financial issues(which has been my whole life).
My doc will also let me schedule a short phone call and doesn't charge me for this.
Hope you can find someone a little more flexible.
Phil
ps..I was talking to my docs office mgr. and she said my doc was not money hungry like others she's worked for. She takes time off, for her mental health, drives an older car and lives in a modest home.
My admiration for her increased.

Yours is a very common problem unfortunately. I have had the same experience. Unless you need psychotherapy, I would recommend that you go to your regular family doctor to get your prescriptions. You didn't say what type of drug you are taking. If it is an antidepressant, 70% of antidepressants are prescribed by primary doctors such as pediatricians, OBGYN's family docs, and internists. The other 30% by psychiatrists.

My psychiatrist kept making me come in for refills eventhough I didn't think it was necessary. I then had my regular internist take over and all I have to do now is call the office and talk to the receptionist and I get the refills called in. I get 6 months of Celexa at a time and do not have to keep making appointments.

Androog,
I live in the Chicago suburbs and had the same problem. I couldn't find an affordable pdoc. Finally decided to go to my regular doctor and ask him if he had any bright ideas. He told me to go to my county's Health Dept. I did--and they have counseling on a sliding scale. I'm now seeing a therapist--who's got me set up with a new pdoc also--and all for the low, low price of $4 a session (being the single parent of two kids--one with autism--I am only able to work part-time and am admittedly on the LOW end of things). Just thought this might help though!
