trazodone still has the respect of psychiatry in the recalcitrant insomniac depressed.

Chivalry, you sound pretty knowledgable about Trazadone so I thought I'd ask you this. I started Traz for insomnia that is exacerbated by Prozac and Geodon and 100 mg is doing a fairly good job for me, but I would like to try 150. I am taking this drug purely for the sedation benefit and wonder what sort of side effects have been know to pop up with a dose of 150mg( if any)and if this could interfere with my other meds. My pdoc is on vaction and I would just like to try this. Thank you, Collette

Hi Collette.

Sorry to but it...

Did you add Geodon to Prozac specifically to amplify its antidepressant effect or was it added for its antipsychotic properties or to treat rumination?

How well is it working?

Had you tried Zyprexa?

Thanks.

I was suffering from Prozac "poop out" after taking it since it first came on the market. We are trying to augment it's AD effect. I tried Zyprexa and found it to be the most wonderful drug I ever took! I felt great and energetic..almost a tiny manic feel, like just lots of energy. I also was gaining at least a lb a day and had to stop because of that. I can't afford to gain weight. So Geodon was the next choice and I think it's working well since I haven't felt depressed since I started it and my moods have been stable. Still, I wish it could be Zyprexa! HTH, Collette

My personal experience: Trazodone was immediately and intensely sedating, while Nefazodone has a longer acting and less intense sedative effect on me.

I was not on a therapeutic dose of Trazodone, just enough to go to sleep (ie, counter the insomnia of serotonergic meds such as paxil and effexor). When I had some effexor poop-out/intolerance of higher doses, my pdoc suggested plugging in the nefazodone both for the sleep and for the antidepressant effect/augmentation.

Over time, my ratio of effexor:nefazodone has flipped. I started at 375 effexor:200 nefazodone, and gradually moved to where I am now, which is 262.5 effexor:500 nefazodone.

It is sedating for me in the hours after taking it but it doesn't cause sedation for me throughout the 24 hour cycle. I take it all a couple of hours before bed.

Thanks, Collette. I appreciate your taking the time to respond.

A few more questions if you would be so kind...

How long have you been taking Geodon?

What dosage do you think is best?

Are you experiencing insomnia?

Which do you think works better, Geodon or Zyprexa?

Thanks again.

I felt that Zyprexa worked the best for me. It even gave me a little "high" which helped me feel more energetic. The big downside however, is the weight gain. If you are one of the few who can take it without having that side effect, you will be very lucky. It also worked much faster than Geodon seemed to. I was told that I would know within a WEEK if it was working for me but actually, I felt awesome the very next day. My pdoc said that is possible. I think I explained how the Geodon is helping me and that ( for me,) it has made my already insomnical self even more so, hence the Trazodone (on top of the Soma, Xanax and Benedryl I already was taking to sleep because of Prozac). Oh, and I have been taking Geodon ( a daily total of 40 mgs) for a month. I don't know what dosage works best...my pdoc is on vacation and I will discuss where to go with it when he gets back. Unfortunately, I still feel like I need more....motivation and energy. What is your story? Collette

My story? I wish I had one to tell! Pretty much no story since age 10. Depression.

I have been diagnosed as having a form of bipolar disorder for which mania only appears in associated with medication. Antidepressants have caused me to become very manic three or four times. Aside from this, I have experienced a continuous severe depression for the last 24 years. Ouch. That really sucks to write.

I've been on quite a few drugs, some of which have been investigational and never marketed. MAOIs and tricyclics have been most helpful. Lamictal helps also. Right now, I am taking Lamictal 100mg, Effexor 300mg, and nortriptyline 50mg. I have tried Risperdal, Zyprexa, and Geodon. All three seemed to help initially, but I was forced to stop taking them when higher dosages (1.5mg, 5.0mg, and 60mg respectively) produced a "zombie-like" state. Each time, I had been taking 300mg of Lamictal. I have since reduced the dosage of Lamictal to 100mg. I am suspicious that the higher dosage may have played a role in producing the cognitive side effects. Hopefully, I will be able to go back to one of these drugs. I sort of liked the way Zyprexa made me feel better than the others, but I'd like to get a feel as to how well others do with Geodon long-term before choosing which one to try again.

Stay well.
