My personal experience: Trazodone was immediately and intensely sedating, while Nefazodone has a longer acting and less intense sedative effect on me.
I was not on a therapeutic dose of Trazodone, just enough to go to sleep (ie, counter the insomnia of serotonergic meds such as paxil and effexor). When I had some effexor poop-out/intolerance of higher doses, my pdoc suggested plugging in the nefazodone both for the sleep and for the antidepressant effect/augmentation.
Over time, my ratio of effexor:nefazodone has flipped. I started at 375 effexor:200 nefazodone, and gradually moved to where I am now, which is 262.5 effexor:500 nefazodone.
It is sedating for me in the hours after taking it but it doesn't cause sedation for me throughout the 24 hour cycle. I take it all a couple of hours before bed.
