Zoloft to Wellbutrin: questions and concerns.

Posted by Paddy on August 12, 2001, at 1:44:05

Since this is my first post here I guess I'll give a little history of my AD use. I started taking ADs in 92 (prozac 20mg) and then around 95 started on Zoloft and have been on it since. As of last Monday I've been taking Wellbutrin SR 150mg once a day and taking my usual 50mg dose of Zoloft every other day to begin to wean myself off of it. I basically never researched ADs until recently and came to the conclusion that my apathy and "numbness" might actually be the Zoloft and not laziness. As for withdrawal, from what I've read it would be better to slowly decrease the dosage and take the drug every day instead of "yo-yo"ing. (A few times I've either run out of my meds or stopped taking them so I'm well aware of the dibilitating effects of going "cold turkey" with Zoloft.) Unfortunately my prescription is 100mg tabs that I half and so far my attempts at cutting the pill into quarters has been pretty unsuccessfull and inconsistent. Recommendations? Also, I read somewhere here that in Canada the recommened dose for Wellbutrin is 150mg SR a day. Is this true and if so why the disparity? Finally, in case the Wellbutrin does not work for me what is the popular consensus on the withdrawal effects of this medication?

Thank you for your time and thoughts.

Wellbutrin DOES work for your basic depressive illness.
I had taken Prozac for a few years then it pooped out on me. Your doc is wise, however, to wean you off the SSRI. Whereas there are arguments for using WB along with an SSRI, if the SSRI has stopped working for you, why take the unnecessary med? Your dose for WB will increase to 150 SR x 2, it is always started slowly then built up due to some side effect is has. Once you get on two a day, it may be 3-4 weeks before you see the best results, so hang with it. Also, if you just feel too jittery or anxious after you are on twice a days, ask doc for a benzo like Tranzene or Klonopin. They work well.

I'm no psychiatrist, but I did switch from Zoloft to Wellbutrin several years ago. I don't remember the exact way my doctor had me reduce the dose of Zoloft, but I do know that I did take the medication every day. Is there any way you can get your doctor to give you some Zoloft in a lower dose pill - maybe she/he has some samples you could use? I've been on 150 mg of Wellbutrin SR twice a day for over three years now. I was on a lower dose at first but experienced some breakthrough seasonal depression so the dose was increased.
