I just started Zoloft today 12.5 mg and have had several
side effects that aren't exactly, shall we say, uplifting.
Nausea, stomach upset, tired, spaced out, de-motivated. How long does
this last? Eventually, doctor wants me up to 50 mg per
day. I am on 150 mg Wellbutrin daily (says I am too anxious)
so augmented with Zoloft and I also tale 1.5mg Klonopin
per night to help sleep. Take Zoloft in the a.m....fear
this is a mistake. Does anyone know what I can look forward
to with Zoloft as part of treatment and how long these
side effects last. Thanks for helping if you can.

Hi Jacquie,
I take zoloft 175 mg per day.
At 25 mg, no effects.
At 50 mg, initiated ultra rapid cycling bipolar disorder with the following additional symptoms:*nausea
*hot flashes
*sweating
*hand tremor
*headaches
*anxiety(At this point I was hospitalized for the bipolar disorder and put on additional meds)
Now, at 175 mg, the only things I can attribute to zoloft are hand (and foot and jaw) tremor and mild nausea within the first 90 minutes of an increase in dose (keeping the dose constant causes no nausea).
Remember: everyone is different.

That was actualy the first AD I was on several years ago. Like other SSRI's, it takes several weeks to really set in to where you can feel the full effects. I had problems with upset stomach and lack of libido that lasted the duration of treatment. The GI problems were lessoned, but not eliminated by taking it in the PM with dinner.
I forget what dose I was on.
My fiance has eyes the color of a 50 mg. zoloft tab.Unless it's absolutely unbearable, wait until you get up to the full dose to decide what you think.

That's funny about the eyes! Humor is always a
good medicine. Thank you for your advice. I think
I have to skip the Zoloft. I can't take the side
effects. THe stomach thing is horrible and nausea
is not good and I felt more depressed because I think
it shot down the wellbutrin a little bit. I feel
calmer, but not upbeat. Thank you for your advice.
I would rather increase my wellbutrin, but doc
doesn't want to. I may ask him again. I don't
think I can handle waiting out the end result of
zoloft.

Thanks for writing me , Ted. Wow, 175 mg...whew.
Here I am whining about 1/2 of a 25 mg pill...it's that
bad with the stomach thing most of the day.It sounds like it works for you and that's great.
Except having to go to the hospital. Sorry to hear
that.I have a hard time with meds as I am so sensitive to them
That is more tormenting sometimes than anxiety, depression
stuff. I guess the doc thinks my anxiety levels are
so high that it is creating even greater anxiousness
and also depression. I don't know the exact circle
of events, I have high anxiety and this causes depression or as my therapist said, "presents itself as depression"
It is an end result. I suspected this all along.
Things happen in different orders, not always depression first.
I am rambling.... I do thank you for your advice.Best to you-

Ted,
Did the hot flashes go away? I've had problems with them on every SSRI I've tried in the past 3 years. Also, how did you control the "ultra rapid cycling bipolar disorder"? How often short was your cycling? Again, I have had similar problems with SSRIs, but they have had enormous benefits, too, so consider hanging in there, Jacquie.

What is ultra rapid cycling bipolar disorder?
Why would you get that from a med? Or is it
a predisposition excerbated by a med? The Zoloft,
such a small dose made me feel so down and then
all the side effects. I tried Celexa for 3 months
before finally quitting and it had real good benefits
but I couldn't take the bruising and all the weird
side jaw clenching (broke many teeth) neck pain,
micro awakenings (3x night) and lack of motivation
and inabiity to think quickly...slowed alpha waves I
guess. I know these meds have really good benefits,
but its so hard to go through the side effects.
I don't think I can hang in there feeling like I did all
day. Just real gloomy. I m trying to hang in there
somewhere, anywhere!

Hi Jacquie,
For people who have an underlying cyclical mood-swing problem or bipolar disorder ("manic-depressive" illness), and not just depression, OCD, or anxiety alone, antidepressants can cause faster mood cycling, so they often have to take mood stabilizers like lithium too. I hope your side effects go away and that you get some relief!
Good luck,

Hi Jacquie:
I'm on 350 Wellbutrin and 200 mg zoloft, and for me, it's a good combination. I remember when I first started zoloft, I got very strong jaw and neck tension, and yawned and yawned......but symptoms finally went away, and I'm very happy with the combo. I also take .5 mg klonopin before bed, and sleep deeply throughout the night - my WH however can't believe that I don't hear our doggie barking during the night - or anything else that happens either....
Good luck - as you well know, what works for one, don't necessarily mean works for another.....
Keep in touch.

Jacquie & Chaston,
I have to add the Yawn... that Emmanuela mentioned, but it went away in about 6 months. I also must add sexual dysfunction (anorgasmia) which only started when I raised the dose from 150 to 175 mg. I, too, am taking wellbutrin 150mg BID, but I take ambien instead of klonopin at bedtime.
The hot flashes & sweating disappeared after the first 5 days. Hand, foot, and jaw tremor have continued, but I also take Depakote which also causes tremor, but I think most is from the zoloft. After 2 years, my foot tremor is nearly gone; jaw tremor is reduced; and hand tremor is as strong as ever.
I take depakote 500mg BID for the bipolar disorder. I had(have) latent bipolar disorder, and when the zoloft started taking effect, it pushed me into mania for a day, then I crashed into TERRIBLE depression for a day, repeating like that for 6 days, then my wife took me to the hospital, where I stayed for a week inpatient, then 2 weeks outpatient. Bipolar is controlled well now.
The GREAT side effect is that my OCD disappeared too, even though I was not being treated for it.
Feel free to ask anything anytime.

My secretary at work has the same problem. What she does is 2 things: She takes St. John't Wort instead of prescription ADs since it is weaker and has fewer side effects, and she meditates a lot. It has helped her GREATLY.Good luck.

Hi Ted,
Thank you for your advice, very much. Infact I thank
everyone for being so quick and informative.
I wish I could take St. John's Wort, but I work
outdoors for a living and the sun (long exposure)
and SJW don't mix well. Therapist had been
hounding me about meditation and I know I should.
I have done it before so I know I can get there.
I opted to nix the zoloft. The side affects scared
me too much. I have tried alot of things along
side mis diagnosis as a manic depressive years back.
That was real rough. The treatment that is.I like Wellbutrin for some reason, barely a side effect
except the 4am awakening. I can cope right now with
that. I wish there was something that would
ease my anxiety better, social and otherwise. Maybe I
should start with celexa again, just 10 mg.Thanks for all your time and advice.
Best,
Jacquie

Dear Emmanuela,
thanks for your post. I had to forfeit the zoloft as the effects
were just too much for this system to handle.
I wrote my shrink today (he charges for everything!
and will even charge me for reading my letters
and listening to my messages! He is for real. SO he
has allowed me 2 freebies for now, so I wrote)
Problem is, he is good and he knows his meds, but
what a pain sometimes. harvard type, must be paying those
student loans off....anyway I hope he increases
the wellbutrin and maybe I will try a little ccelexa again. Thanks for sharing with me.

Hi Jacquie,
Just noticed this post ... I take Wellbutrin too, and also used to wake up around 3 or 4 a.m., not being able to get back to sleep. Are you taking the Wellbutrin in the a.m. and p.m.? I used to do that, but my doctor now has me taking the Wellbutrin twice a day, 6 hours apart. (around 8 am and 2 pm). I no longer wake up in the middle of the night.
Just thought I'd pass that along -

Thanks for the info, Ted. I'm glad the Depakote/Zoloft combo works for you, maybe it will for me. Last time I took welbutrin (by itself), though, I couln't sleep. Ambien's great for sleep, but do you feel like you have to limit the length of time you can take it (might lose efectiveness)?

Thanks! and good luck. You might want to contact me before you start the depakote to get a heads-up -- it has some nasties to watch out for.
> Last time I took welbutrin (by itself), though, I couln't sleep.
Did you take it in the early pm like Cindylou suggested? That works best for most people.
>Ambien's great for sleep, but do you feel like you have to limit the length of time you can take it (might lose efectiveness)?
No. I have been taking it nightly for 9 months, with no noticeable loss of effect. I break tablets and take only 3-4 mg. If, for some reason, I happen to take 5+ mg, then the 3-4 mg dose has diminished effect for a couple of days, but then works ok again.

Hi Cindylou,
Thanks for the info. Since I was up so early at 4:30ish
I would have java and then take 150mg by 5:30 a.m.
I guess that is pretty sensitive. When I don't take
Wellbutrin i don't have this problem. Thing is, it
is a very motivating drug to me and I can handle 4-4:30.
There was a time it was earlier and that was getting very bad.
I don't take a second dose, but want to. Up to at
least another 100mg . I am awaiting word from
shrink. He thinks I will be up at 3am if we increase,
but I can't think of another anti-depressant I would
want to take. Maybe a little celexa, but that's it.
I am glad Wellbutrin works for you. Do you sometimes
get kinda blue? Or does the dosage keep that at bay?
What does the Wellbutrin do for you if I may ask?

Hi Jacquie,
Well, I'm kind of new to being on Wellbutrin alone. It has always been used with other meds to help offset the fatigue (I've taken it with Zoloft, and then with Effexor.)I am now tapering off the Effexor and I'm almost done with it ... I have been feeling much more focused and energetic. I think the Wellbutrin gives me that extra "edge ... " When I started taking it, I noticed that I had a bit more endurance than without it, and was able to focus better. It did seem keep the depression "at bay" as well. I'm noticing these things a lot more without the Effexor.
Yes, I do still have my blue moments. Just the other day, I was feeling very down -- my 16-month old daughter had been sick for several days, and I kind of lost it ... At one point when she wouldn't stop crying, I just sat down and started crying with her! (Some support I was.) I wasn't sure if my depression that day was typical for a mom with a sick child, or part of my whole "chemical imbalance."
Anyway, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say I'm at about a 6 (when I was on Effexor I was at about a 3.) I am going to wait until the Effexor is totally out of my system to see if I feel any better; if not, I may try adding St. John's Wort since the SSRIs have such bad side effects for me. I don't expect to get to a 10, but an 8 or 9 would sure be nice.
Sorry if I rambled on here ... hope I answered your questions somewhere in this novel!
Take care,
cindy

Do you think the Prozac or Seroquel could be making you tired? I was on Prozac for awhile and it WIPED ME OUT. I am in the minority, since most people get energy from it; but all SSRI meds totally exhaust me. I used to sleep like a log, and wanted to sleep all day, when on SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft and Effexor.) Even adding the Wellbutrin didn't make much of a difference.
Just some food for thought ... I don't know anything about Seroquel though.

Cindylou, Thanks for responding ...I have suspected that Prozac might be the problem. I have been on Prozac for 7 years and I don't think it is working as well as it once did. I went to my pdoc this am and she stopped the prozac cold turkey and put me on Effexor xr. From reading this board I am aware that this will start a whold new set of issues. I am starting a new thread to see if anyone knows what I should expect.

Hey Jacquie,
I just weened myself off effexor and have started
taking zoloft, about 4 weeks now. I am taking
100mg Zoloft(PM) and 150mg Welbutrin(AM).I have had everything from nausia to headaches
runs, loss of sleep and general disinterest in
everything. My pdoc says that will all go away
and although I feel a little better being off
the effexor I have not felt "great" at all.I have heard that he change in meds could take
4-8 weeks to balance out so I guess we wait.Best of luck to you. Wolfman
