Aderall + Wellbutrin + St. John's Wort??

Posted by Cindylou on April 2, 2001, at 20:30:20

Has anyone heard of this combo of meds?

I am currently taking 300 mg. of Wellbutrin daily, plus 37.5 mg. of Effexor -- but I am tapering off the Effexor due to fatigue.

My nutritionist and psych. said St. John's Wort may be a good alternative to the Effexor, since I cannot tolerate any SSRIs (ALL cause severe fatigue.)

Has anyone here with chronic deperssion had any luck with St. John's Wort?

Also, I have troubling ADD symptoms, which my doc says are caused by anxiety, not by actual ADD. I'm wondering if a small dose of Aderall could help? And, would Aderall + Wellbutrin be a lethal combo since they are both stimulants? (Anti-anxiety meds don't work for me -- they just knock me out. Tried Klonapin, Ativan, and Buspar.)

Thank you all for any advice/help you can give me!

For anxiety, perhaps you can try nefazodone, risperidone, olanzapine, MIRTAZAPINE, oxazapam or temazapam.

Your ADD and Depression could both be helped by adderall, considering that the first antidepressants were stimulants. But methylphenidate has more antidepressant properties than the other stimulants. Oh, and I seriously doubt that Adderall + Wellbutrin would cause any health problems--I've never heard of something like that.

Cindylou,

I may be barking up the wrong tree here - only a good psychiatrist or mood disorder specialist could be sure - but your ADD symptoms combined with depression MAY be Bipolar Disorder. It was with me and after years of misdiagnoses, I was properly diagnosed and put on mood stabilizers.

Do you have restlessness, anxiety, fast thinking and speech, then irritability and possibly outbursts of anger accompanying or in periods before or following your depression? If so, do some internet research on the disorder and get an excellent doc to help you.

Hoping you find balance...

Karen

Hi Karen,
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I did mention your theory to my therapist, who was adamant that I was not bipolar -- he said I would know by now if I had had a manic episode, since they start at age 19 (I'm 36).

But it's interesting how you describe bipolar -- almost as if there can be a more mild "mania..." I have had episodes of irritability, restlessness, anxiety -- usually accompanying the depression, and usually when I'm NOT on antidepressants.

Do you think your doctor could refer me to someone in my area? I live very close to the University of Michigan Medical Center; perhaps he/she would know of someone there...

Either way, I thank you for your concern and information!
