I am on 20mg clomipramine. I have been on this stuff for 2.5 months and was wondering, does my nightly dose of 20mg have the ability to change my mood within a few hrs/mins? I was under the assumption that, the medicine was accumulative and that, the total amt. in the blood actually was responsible for behaviour changes?

Everyone reacts so differently it is no way to tell. The mode of action of these psychoactive meds is unknown. I repeat unknown. I find myself frustrated by seemingly knowledgable well intentioned folks discoursing on theories on modes of action of various meds as if it was fact, but thats just not how it is. It would be nice if these theories were true. Some might be correct, partially correct or totally wrong. It just is not known. Relatively little is spent to aggressively answer these unknowns. More seems to be invested in recycling variations on the same types of meds. Understanding seems not to be a priority. Some of these old theories have been around 50 years and are not closer to being found factual. Oh well.

Thats not really true. We know and can prove some of the things AD's do. The question of how this one provable action fits into the chain of events to improve move is not totally known.I don't think it is reasonable to bash science for not knowing all the answers to this question,
it is a very complex and changable system. It is not simple like going to the moon or gigahertz processors.

The answer may have to do with whether or not you are on the right meds or combination of meds.
I have had what felt like a response within a day or two. This was when I was first on a MAO inhibitor many years ago. With the SSRI's it has seemed to take longer.
Sometimes it just never happens or I gave up before the med got to the point where it might have worked. But I don't believe in waiting too long especially when you are in dire straights.

Dubya:
That sounds too long to me for it not to be working.
Try this link:

I'm not certain if it's legit but it's associated with web md which is big now.
P.S. Don't get discouraged with sometimes facetious remarks here - it's just folks letting off steam re: the troubles they've had with defunct meds...

I SUCK because I do. What kind of side-effect will GRAPEFRUIT JUICE CAUSE w/ ANTI-DEPRESSANT because, I WANT to DRINK It BECAUSE I AM MAD AT MYSELF.

I don't think you have a problem :)
Sounds to me like this one isn't working. If it were, you'd make a comment that would cause Dr. Bob to step in and say "Please be civil", which is what I wanted to do. ;)
As others have advised, please see your pdoc soon. I have stuck with meds too long that weren't working because I thought I "should" and you owe it to your self to keep working at it so that you don't feel like you "suck".
I used to avoid concepts such as "you must first love yourself before you can care for others" but I believe it whole heartedly now.
Please make an appt. today.
Best of luck!
