to be fair it is a protease inhibitor rather than an antiretroviral.

to be honest...

your family can provide 'informed consent' on your behalf.

we are big on that, in new zealand.

you know how it is, ventillate someone so they can't protest. get family signing consents.

i went to an ethics talk in Otago. it was zoom recorded or something. i guess so they could see how people were responding to the talk.

they wanted to change the law so that they could do experiments on people in dementia care facilities and the like.

the idea was that since these people could not provide informed consent their consent could be assumed or implicit. so... in other words... asssuming that people would consent if they could move, say, but since they couldn't move, we would assume that they agreed with us and with what we wanted to do with them -- right?

and of course people thought that under mob rule this is a good idea. people who are immobilised generally would of course agree to do whatever we want to do with them of course they would.

it was something about a law change...

i remember distinctly putting my hand up and saying 'at least let people opt out. like a living will. let people say they want to go down on teh record as not being experimented on when they are not in the position to give informed consent thanks very much'.

they didn't like introducing the possibility of 'opt off' when it came to experimenting on people.

the idea seems to be that you can find a tribal leader somewhere willing to sign off on or sign over consents for people to do anything they like to their people.

so, you know. that makes it easier to do experiments on maaori. just get one tribal leader to consent on behalf of all the people.

i think Richard Faull even said something about their brains being shpped after death, too. some brain bank in Boston...
