HI Sarah,
I agree! Sutherland was a phenomenon when she was singing! Is Pavarotti the tenor on that album? He is one of my faves. Some days when I need a smile, I can just play O sole mio and I feel better.
I've always loved Lucia as well....It just was never a role I was well-suited to. The opera world today is very specialized, so you have to find out what works for you, within a certain perameter, and stick to that.
Sutherland was a Dramatic Soprano - singing heavy rep, and having a not so great career. When she met and married Richard Bonynge, he helped her discover that she had, not only weight in her voice, but also loft and agility. This is what made her so great and world class. Pavarotti became super-famous, partially because he was the only tenor around who was taller than Sutherland!!! She helped to launch his career. Strange world...Ever listen to Donizetti's Anna Bolena? Amazing stuff there too....great mad scene for Anne Boleyn.
Well, keep listening....and thanks
Diane
