I think it's difficult to define altruism as a global quality. Historically though, the prediction of the degradation of society is expounded upon by doomsayers with every generation, and using very similar terminology.
According to the writings of Plato to those of Lear, the younger generation's decadence, selfishness, search for quick fixes and lack of respect for their elders, combined with the onslaught of consumerism is leading to a breakdown in the fabric of society.
