This is definitely the case for me. Until I started talking to him, I was unaware of how it felt to be cared for, listened to. I had never really allowed myself to be vulnerable to anyone or to ask for help. Therapy with him was a transformative experience. And it has made me able to make myself vulnerable and to ask for help from other people. I am now able to have close friendships, which I never was able to do before. Even my (soon to be ex) husband, who is not a sensitive guy and had no empathy for my mental health problems, talks about me as pre-Dr. A and post-Dr. A.
I grew a lot. Much more than I thought would ever be possible at my age (I started therapy in my late 40s). Therapy can be life-changing if you are able to form a close connection with the therapist.
