I can certainly relate. I was in therapy in the past and ended therapy in 1994. I was doing fine or so I thought. No depression, no meds, no therapy. Then boom; in 2005, sh*t happened, and I went back to therapy as old stuff from the past reared it's ugly head, stuff I had not fully dealt with. So, here I was all over again and with a therapist I liked but who was not right for me. Since May I have been with an analyst who I feel is the right person for me. In just six months we have made more progress (albeit painful as you say) than I did with the guy before him who pushed ECT and which I did. Do not despair. We are here for support. Therapy if it is really working is painful, and so it is important to be with someone you can feel is a good match especially if you are doing insight oriented more long-term therapy.
