I always ask before I hug someone for the first time. My therapist sometimes initiate hugs, sometimes I do, but there is always a touch, if only a brief gentle grasp of an elbow. Today she was about to hug me, but I feel like I might be getting a cold, so we just kind of waved at each other.

I do think it's a powerful tool of communication, that can say what we aren't always able to put into words. For me, a hug given usually means "I'm so glad that we are here together."
