Ouch. Yes, I can see where that would hurt.
My therapist does that from time to time. It's part of our closing ritual that he tells me I can call him if I need to. And if he knows he's going to be tied up or something, he'll tell me why, and that it will be ok to call, but he might not be able to get back to me until late. We almost never talk long on the phone, since he's so rotten at it.
Perhaps he's going to be somewhere where he just can't get to a phone. Like my therapist tells me that sometimes when he's going to be at a conference.
The good thing is that *he* asked *you* if you wanted to check in. Not even to call if you needed to, but if you wanted to check in. And he arranged a time when he could give you the full attention he'd want to give you. In some ways that's a very caring and special thing to do.
