I wanted to encourage Angie to be sure to differentiate between drugs that deal with mania and those for depression in bipolar disorder. Many of the "mood stabilizers" are aimed toward capping mania, and don't really address depression. Alternately, giving SSRIs to someone with BP can kick them into mania; so if treating depression, there are other better alternatives.
Of course, that's just general principle. There may be folks with bipolar disorder who do well with SSRIs and are helped by mood stabilizers on the depressive end of things--mainly because we all seem to react according to our own idiosyncratic physiology.
Just wanted to mention that.
