In reply to bad reaction to taurine, posted by pat321 on January 20, 2010, at 14:23:41
That is a rather nasty reaction. I didn't fare well with taurine either. It was calming as it was supposed to be, yet created some inner restlessness at the same time. Very strange feeling to be calm on the outside and nervous on the inside. I didn't like it at all. It also made my depression a notch worse.
I've seen a few accounts though of it being wonderful for some people.
No matter what the substance is that we try, I do exactly as you did and "dip my toes in the water" first just to see what will happen before I dive in. I've had enough bad reactions that I am maybe a little over cautious now, but gladly so.
All substances...meds, plants, supplements, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, even foods, whatever...deserve respect because while we have a good idea what they should do generally, we don't have any idea what they will do with us in particular.
I'm very sorry you had a bad reaction, and happy you approached it with wisdom.
Sometimes I wonder...was it the substance itself, or was it one of the fillers? I guess we would never know unless you bought several different brands and sampled them all one at a time.
Acetyl-L-Carnitine is supposed to be a benign substance with many benefits. I tried it once, at very small doses. First day, seemed ok. Second day, worst headache in history and I literally felt poisoned all over. Felt like a nuclear bomb in my head. I've never heard of anyone else having a bad reaction to it.
So until I know how I will respond to something, I always sample it very gently first. As you did. Glad you did.
I'm not sure what the reason for trying taurine was. If it was for anxiety, calmness, or mood stabilizer, you should consider combining small amounts of gaba, glycine, and magnesium, or any two of them.
