Generally speaking, I have been suffering from severe unremitting depression since 1977. I was first diagnosed and treated in 1982. Lots of drugs. Lots of doctors. Lots of research.
Currently:
tranylcypromine (Parnate) 80 mg/day
* nortriptyline (Pamelor) 150 mg/day
lamotrigine (Lamictal) 300 mg/day
lithium (lithium carbonate) 300 mg/day
aripiprazole (Abilify) 10 mg/day
prazosin (Minipress) 30 mg/day* I crossed-over from desipramine to nortriptyline this week in order to compare my responses to them. I had been taking 300 mg/day of desipramine.
Prazosin may have some utility in treating:
"Developmental PTSD"
"Complex PTSD"
"Complex Trauma Disorder"My doctor says that my case is complicated by the chronic childhood traumas that would indicate developmental PTSD. Prazosin has been a critical component of my treatment. It feels like a very clean antidepressant. People with PTSD report sleeping better and without nightmares while taking relatively small dosages of prazosin. However, when dosages are increased, daytime anxiety and depression improve. I take 30 mg/day. The maximum recommended is 40 mg/day.
There is one side effect of prazosin that has emerged that I am very unhappy about. It has lowered my sex-drive substantially. Oh, well. The cost is still worth the benefit.
