Hey. Depakote isn't always that great for depression, at least not in bipolar disorder. Some docs claim depakote is good for anxiety, but some people (myself included) have found that it can increase anxiety and agitation. I'm not a doctor, so I can't tell you why this happens, but it does happen.
The important thing in psychiatry isn't so much sticking with a certain med or combo of meds or following doctor's orders; rather, the important thing to remember as a mental health consumer is to aggressively seek the best possible results with the absolute minimum side-effects. I'd personally say that if you think depakote sucks this early in the game, tell your doc its a no-go. You have other options, after all.
