I understood that emotional crying (vs. crying that rids an eye of an irritant) produces prolactin, which helps a body to relieve stress. It does explain why sometimes a "good cry" can be so cathartic and leave us feeling much better. On the other hand, there are times when I can't *stop* crying, and it brings no relief to my melancholy. But one seems to be for a release of pent-up stress, and the other is more like an overflowing bathtub, so maybe that makes sense.
