I think some of it is $$$--xanax is still big in the US, even now that we know it can cause problems, because of all the $$$ and the big push to use it for everything in the 80s and 90s. Klonopin is big b/c its a) trendy and b) there's that new dissolving form of it that seems to be really popular (why, I'm not sure...)
Plus, most people think "Valium", "ohh, hardcore, Mother's Little helper, blah blah blah". Its kind of ridiculous.
