Yeah, thyroid augmentation can help. Usually T3 is used. If the patient is bipolar I understand that sometimes it's preferable to use T4 or T4+T3 (like they have in some formulations). T4 by itself for unipolar is rarely effective, I don't know why people take T4 for unipolar depression.
It's possible to do and I believe it's pretty safe, IF you're having your levels checked before and after. There is some risk of increased heart rate and so on. No solution is perfect.
I think that in clinical reality it's kind of a high-maintenence thing to do, it's much easier to throw Wellbutrin or Seroquel (ah!) at someone. I know that Li and thyroid augmentation is better studied, but that requires blood work and yucky stuff like that. So, it seems to be less commonly used.
