The gum only relieves the nicotine craving. The other components of smoke also act as MAO-B inhibitors. MAO-B is what the brain uses to metabolize dopamine and phenethylamine dominantly. The gum does not offer this rewarding characteristic of cigarettes, but I found out when I started taking the MAO-B inhibitor Selegiline, I just did not want to smoke as much, it's like I didn't really care to smoke as much, just occassionally.

Just thought I'd pass that along. The gum is perfectly harmless for your body, BTW, and can be used with Selegiline to literally COMPLETELY abolish the need to smoke. I, consiquently just chew the gum now.
