My pdoc says that clonazepam seems to work for years for many patients and is very safe. I've taken it for about three years with no need to increase the dose (1 mg/day). Conversely, I developed tolerance to Xanax (another benzo) very rapidly, and now use it only occasionally for this reason.

And I do know of people who have taken Valium (yet another benzo, the "original") for decades without any problems. I hate the stuff, but it works very well for many. A doctor friend of mine has a patient in her 70s who has had good results with Valium (at the same dose that she started with) since the 1960s.
