Cyclothymic in the UK

Posted by Anna Bull on March 21, 2003, at 7:06:37

Is there anyone out there who lives in the UK who has had trouble getting a diagnoses and treatment for cyclothymia? I was so relieved when I came across this condition a few months ago, because I didn't even know it existed, but it was so obviously me. However my GP told me that in the UK they don't 'believe' in it. He referred me for a psychiatric assessment anyway, which I finally had recently, and they want to put me on anti-depressants, 'just to see if it works'. This is after I explained what I thought was wrong with me and what I needed. I know the NHS is an unwieldy inefficient beast, but there must be some help that I can get from it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? What can I do?
