Over the last few years, GHB has become progressively more popular within the United States as an illegal
substance. This is likely because of the effects that GHB has on the human body. When GHB is taken in the proper
dosage it can have an intoxicating effect. The user will most likely feel an increase in energy, a feeling of affection,
muscle relaxation, and it enhances one’s sexuality. One of the main reasons it is so popular among the club and rave
scene is because of the effect it has on music. Users have repeatedly described that change in volume and tones are
extremely noticeable12.With these pleasurable effects come the side effects as well. Many people who use GHB experience bad reactions to
the drug, even when taken properly. Some users have experienced nausea, headaches, dizziness, amnesia,
uncontrollable vomiting, respiratory problems, loss of consciousness, or even being conscious but not being able to
move13. These effects are good examples of why GHB is often compared to Rohypnol and associated with date rape
and sexual assault. GHB has been associated with hundreds of sexual assault cases and almost a hundred victims
have tested positive for GHB after being sexually assaulted14.While there are no true known long-term effects of GHB, it is still an extremely dangerous drug. Many people who
use and abuse the drug will not pay attention to dosage or will mix it with other drugs. GHB is particularly easy to
overdose on if not careful. There is a very fine line between a normal dose and too much. When too much GHB is
taken the user will become tired and will soon be unconscious and begin to vomit. In addition to this, when mixed
with other drugs such as alcohol, GHB can be fatal15.Many have described GHB as the "sneakiest drug on Earth". This is because of the severe memory loss that the
user suffers while on the drug. Today it can be found in almost every metropolitan area and is known as Georgia
Home Boy, goop, Liquid Ecstasy, Gamma 10, and Gross Bodily Harm. When in an unfamiliar place one should not
accept drinks from strangers and if a drink is salty and/or flat one should be careful, as these are signs of GHB16.
