Jill,Neurontin has been the best mood stabilizer for my bipolar depression. Neurontin (based on the latest I heard) selectively blocks voltage sensitive calcium ion channels in the hippocampus. The GABA "thing" may not have much to do with how it works on anxiety. I think it would be worth a try. Watch out about the dose, however. Some people can take a ton of it and not seem to get very fatigued or tired, but I couldn't handle more than 300mg 3x daily. Even starting off with that hit me like a ton of bricks. I also take Klonopin with it, and I have to limit my Klonopin dose because it will make me tired and "sullen" (aka depressed), if I take much during the day-esp. if I don't really need to.
good luck,
Mitch
