Buspirone Augmentation of Antidepressant Therapy"In conclusion, the results of this open-label study in anxiety-prone depressed patients who failed to respond to an adequate trial of an SSRI or clomipramine support the hypothesis that the addition of buspirone may augment the therapeutic efficacy of these antidepressants. Thus, depressed patients deemed to be "treatment-refractory" after such monotherapy may benefit substantially from the addition of buspirone to their existing medication. Because of its proven clinical safety, augmentation of antidepressant efficacy with buspirone offers significant advantage over alternative agents such as lithium (because of the toxicity of the drug) and psychostimulants (because of drug toxicity and the potential for substance abuse)..."
