I think 'junkie' in the US refers to users of 'junk', ie heroin (I learnt that from a W. Burroughs book). In the UK 'junkie' is often used as a generic term for street-drug users. Here heroin-users are more likely to be called 'smack-heads', or more kindly, 'sleepy-heads'.
