In reply to AD and Weight Gain- You cannot loose the weight on, posted by Mush on August 29, 2000, at 11:00:53
Mush,
I want to share my own experiences with you, in the hope they might make you feel more optimistic. I have been on various AD meds over the past 10 years and have had not taken a break from them in this period. Every time I start a new one, I gain at least a stone in weight - high doses of tricyclics and low doses of remeron have been the worst culprits for me. My experience, having gained the weight, seems to differ from those I've heard from others, because I have always been able to lose it again whilst still on the medication. Sure, I work at it over the first 6 months, but I don't think I work much harder than many others (having read so many peoples experiences on this board). I diet and power-walk. The weight goes. It certainly takes me longer to lose it than it ever did before I started on these drugs, but I guess I'm very fortunate, because it still comes off.
I'm sure I cannot be alone in this. For five years I was on 300mg Clomipramine (tricyclic) and I managed to lose the weight even at that dose in about 6 months. I am currently on 45mg of Remeron + 75ms of Clomipramine. The stone I gained in the first month on Remeron took about 8 months to lose. I am now a stone lighter than I was when I started on the drug.
I wish you all the best and hope that you, an others, will have similar experiences to mine.
Caroline
