Good luck finding your Wong & McKeen - Gabriola Island isn't so far from Calgary, closer than China or even T.O., you know and the prices there are pretty reasonable when you consider room and board are included. And for those with American dollars it's that much cheaper...However in the end we heal ourselves, by getting out of our own way, and anyone else just helps facilitate that process by being caring, compassionate, observant and thoughtful enough.Part of healing, I believe, is letting go of all these labels we and others try to pin on ourselves and realizing we are only human. The labels have their time and place but they are only labels and we are what we are, uniquely ourselves yet jointly human with all the frailities that entails and our own add-ons. One I believe is clinging to images of ourselves as dys-functional (a word that makes me cringe as do most diss words).
The author you referred to above is John Bentley Mays who wrote: "In the Jaws of the Black Dog: A Memoir of Depression", and interesting description of his experiences growing up in the South and gradually realizing his depression and dealing with it. Styron's "Darkness Visible" (see Dr. Bob's "Read" page or http://www.amazon.com)is briefer, better written (he's an acclaimed and award winning American author) book, which moved me more.
Sante!
