I have been taking Zyprexa for 18 months and it has worked out well for me. I am bipolar, not psychotic. Since I was also taking Depakote when I first began Zyprexa, it's hard to know which drug caused me to gain 30 lbs. I think the Depakote was more likely the cause of my weight gain. I began at 2.5 mg and then increased it to 5 mg within the past year. I didn't want to take it at first because I thought it was just for schizophrenics. My doctor straightened me out about that not being true. I can't think of any negative side effects I've had. Zyprexa
makes me sleep deeply and longer than I did previously. I used to sleep about 7 hours a night and now 9 hours is about the norm. Overall, I'd say that it has calmed me. It's hard to say what it does specifically because I also take Lamictal, Wellbutrin, Celexa and Klonopin. Combining these meds makes it difficult to know which one does what anymore.
